Squash bug control - some serious questions.......

Hello all,

In a day or two I will be tearing down my winter squash vines and clearing away the debris. Today I noticed a huge infestation of squash bugs just crawling all over the vines and mature squash. Hundreds of them so there is no way I can "just knock them off". As we all know they scatter away when you try to catch them. This is what I plann to do -- will it work??

Double strength Sevin spray with spreader sticker in pump sprayer and spray down the vines and leaves until dripping. Let this sit for 2-3 days then tear down the vines and put all debris into black plastic bags for disposal.

Dormant oil spray in pump sprayer and spray down all vines and leaves until dripping. Let sit few days then trash vines and debris as above.

My thinking is to kill as many of the bugs as possible before removing the vines so as to prevent them from overwintering and coming back even stronger in 2011.

Other ideas?? I am open to most ideas but I am not going organic on this one.

I expect that you will find that squash bugs will treat the Sevin as desert. There are not many if any insecticides available without a license that will kill a squash bug. I have not tried agricultural oils. That may work in high concentrations. At any rate your plan to remove their habitat will stand you in good stead next year. Sanitation is the first step in control.

The tip about the Sevin is greatly appreciated. I will use the dormant oil - it seems to kill just about everything. I have never had such an infestation as I have now. This year the cucumber beetles and squash bugs were impossible. The cucumber beetles even began to eat holes in my Basil and Thai Basil plants!! The only squash plant that survived without any harm was the Seminole (C. moschata).

For the last few days we have seen squash bugs on our bush zucchini. I have been trying (not very successfully) to remove the eggs, and the bugs were sent into a soapy water bath. The bush zucchini is in a container on the deck, all by itself. But in the main garden (40-ish feet away) we have a whole row of various squash and cucumbers. My question is this: should I leave the squash bugs alone on the bush zucchini and use it as a trap crop? I don't mind sacrificing that one plant to save the whole row. We have not seen any squash bugs in the row at all. Or should I put row cover over the bush zuc and just trap the bugs in there? There was a baby praying mantis eating the little bugs yesterday but there are way too many for it to eat them all. Also, if the bugs stay in the potting soil, does that mean that I should not reuse the soil the bush zuc is in next year? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Canokie, Some years we see squash bugs and some years we don't, and we grow a lot of squash in our garden. The last bad year for them here at our house was 2009. I didn't see a single one in 2011, and I don't remember having many in 2010. I just check the undersides of leaves daily for their eggs and scrape the eggs off the leaf and directly into a bucket of soapy water. If I see squash bugs, I usually vacuum them up with a hand-held vaccum cleaner, which I then empty directly into the bucket of soapy water. I normally only see squash bugs on summer squash plants, not on winter squash plants, and that includes pumpkins, which are a winter squash. On winter squash, the problem often is squash vine borers, but I didn't see them last year either. I grew squash here for 6 or 7 years before the squash vine borers arrived, but since then, they're pretty regular visitors. C. moschata types of squash are more resistant to squash vine borers, so that's about the only type of winter squash I grow any more, and of the C. moschata types, 'Seminole' is our favorite variety. It is a rampant grower and generally it climbs our garden fence and, thus, escapes into the wild....where is usually climbs up into the trees. You can grow summer squash under a floating row cover, removing it only to hand-pollinate your squash, or you can grow the plants under the row cover and remove it permanently once they start blooming. Often, if you can get summer squash to the blooming stage, you'll get a good harvest as long as you check the plant daily for squash bugs and remove them when you find them. Since your space is so limited, you might prefer to grow something that is more of a 'guaranteed' producer then summer squash. However, if you like squash, don't let the prospect of squash bugs prevent you from growing it. Just be vigilant about protecting the squash. Seedmama, I think Jay uses a commercial product, unless he has started making his own. I use one similar to the one he has used before or possibly it is the same one--I remember he and I discussing it online some time ago. The one I use is called Garlic Barrier. I find it at Tractor Supply. They usually have it in the stores by mid-spring. I've linked a photo of it below so you know what sort of bottle to look for. I've made my own in the past, but like the convenience of having a ready-to-use product sitting on the shelf. Melissa, I cannot speak for Jay and am sure he'll come back and answer your question himself, but the Garlic spray I use (and I think he has used this same one in the past) is called Garlic Barrier. I usually find it at either a nursery that carries a full-line of organic gardening supplies (in my case, I have to go to the D-FW metro area to find a nursery like that) or sometimes at a feed and seed store like Tractor Supply Company. Sometimes I find it at some TSCs in spring, but not in other years, so either they carry it only sporadically or it sells out regularly. luvabasil, I am not a real huge fan of internet recipes and here is why: (1) they can give highly variable results and can be a waste of time and effort as they often are not strong enough OR (2) they are too strong and the soap or oil in them burns tender plant foliage in our heat and intense sunlight. With a commercial product, you get consistent results as long as you follow the dilution rates precisely and spray as directed, taking care not to over-spray. If these commercial products should not be used after high temperatures reach a certain label because foliage burn can result, it usually so states on the label. Sometimes when using a water-based recipe, I'll add either some commercial sticker-spray to make the recipe adhere to the leaves better, or maybe a little superfine summerweight horticultural oil, but it depends on how hot the temperatures are and also on what type of plant I'm spraying. Some plants have much more delicate foliage than others. Someone as experienced as Jay can go on the strong side by using slightly more product than the label recommends when mixing it up, but I wouldn't do that the very first time I tried a new product. There are times when your gut instinct tells you that more is better, but if you're using a product you've never used before, it can be easy to use too much and burn plant foliage. If you are using a garlic spray with a water base, that may be the issue. I think they work better when oil or soap based, but precision mixing is needed to avoid burning tender foliage. Melissia, There are not many organic methods of controlling squash bugs and the only ones that I have found really work involve hand picking and crushing or drowning them, or vacuuming them off the leaves with a shop vac or cordless hand vac with strong suction. If you use a wet-dry shop vac, put a couple of inches of water in the bottom of the cannister before you turn it on. That way the squash bugs fall into the soapy water, the soap coats their bodies and they can't get out. Without the soapy water, when you open the cannister they may be crawling up the sides of it to escape. I like to lay a 2' x 4' piece of lumber or some other wood scrap on the ground near the squash plants. The bugs congregate under it at night and, in the morning, I pick up the board and step on and smash as many of them as I can before they run away. I also get a fair number of army worms and climbing cutworms this way. I'd rather stomp on them than have to hand-pick them off of plants. I usually don't see much PM here on anything except sugar snap peas, but when I do have it on summer garden plants, I sometimes spray them with Green Cure, which is a potassium bicarbonate spray. For me, it seems stronger and more effective than the usual baking soda spray recipes often recommended for organic gardeners. If I want what I consider to be reliable recipes for home-made organic remedies that are formulated with our hot climate in mind, I go to Howard Garrett's website at dirtdoctor.com. I have found that remedies formulated for milder climates can sometimes burn foliage in our more intense heat and sunlight, but the Dirt Doctor is based in D-FW where the weather is like ours, so I always trust his recipes. "they seldom do really great harm...." Unless of course, their damage removes so much chlorophyll that the leaves CAN'T do what they are supposed to do. A large population of these insects can also result in the loss of other plant juices in large quantities. I've seen this occur on azaleas, pyracantha, and lantana, just to mention three of the common hosts of lacebugs. Such damage is common and not in the best interest of the plant to ignore. OF COURSE, measures should be taken to restore the plant to a healthier status by controlling the pest. There can be up to 5 generations per year in a warm climate!! But I agree with Jean, the images don't really indicate lacebug damage, though that stippling could make one think so. Here's a question: what does the UNDERside of those affected leaves look like? The bottom of lacebug infested leaves will always be covered with dark fecal matter and the tar-like spots which cover their egg clusters. Very dirty. Is that what you see? Hi dancinglemons, I had the same problem this year with squash bugs; they were horrible, the worst I've ever seen. Neem and hot pepper spray [regularly!] kept them under control, but NOTHING we tried eliminated them. Our Seminoles handled it the best, but still suffered.
We plan to torch our pumpkin/squash patch, soon as everything is ripe enough to harvest. [The Seminoles are wearing nylon knee hi's just so they can ripen without being eaten!]

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I got a pretty good handle on the squash bugs. I did not eliminate them 100% but probably 80% destruction was obtained. I am at season end and there will be no more harvest from these plants - please keep that in mind. Here is what I did:

In a one gallon pressure sprayer I mixed 1/2 cup of Dormant Oil Spray, 1/2 cup 80% Neem Oil, 1 cup Rotenone and then 1 teaspoon of Coco-wet spreader sticker. I sprayed this on a day when the temp was about 82 degrees. I sprayed the vines until they were dripping wet. I estimate 50% of the vines were already dead, brown and crispy. The HUGE swarm of squash bugs that emerged from the dead brown leaves was amazing!! There were so many it looked like the vine was moving. I sprayed everything that moved. I found a small swarm of them in the vent leading to my crawl space and I sprayed them with wasp knock-down spray - that bunch is DEAD!! Next day I looked and could only see a few of the squash bugs. After 48 hours I sprayed with 1 cup Rotenone and 1 teaspoon spreader sticker in 1 gallon water.

Did I kill them?? I do not know. They are 80% (give or take) gone. I will be putting a flea bomb in the crawl space once a month until January - just in case any females decide to overwinter under my house. In the spring we will use our torch to torch the area around the raised beds. We can not torch our dead vines at this time because everything is so dry - no rain in long, long time.

See the New York Times for an article on stink-bug infestation in the Mid-Atlantic States. Seems the Dept of Agriculture is working overtime on developing something to kill the stink bugs. I know squash bugs and stink bugs are not the same bug but I think they are cousins.

Hello all,

The drastic measures we took in fall 2010 must have worked somewhat. Over the winter I did much research and found that soil drench of 100% neem will kill overwintering cucumber beetle larva and adults. That is for 2011 season end soil treatment.

So far this season we have only average amounts of cuke beetles and squash bugs.

Here is what I am doing this season:

Started season with my own seeds which I started inside under lights. After plants grew to transplant size I dipped them in Surround WP until they looked like they had been dusted with flour. I then transplanted them outside.
Every 4-5 days I sprayed squash and cukes with Surround to keep the leaves white. If we had a hard rain I sprayed the Surround if it was washed off. A few weeks ago we had 3 days of hard rain which pretty much washed the Surround away. This rain also signaled the beginning of cucumber beetle problems. I sprayed the Surround again but this time I added SaferSoap. This was OK for the squash bugs as I only picked 5 bugs and 4 sets of eggs. This was NOT ok for the cuke beetles. I did more research and found that the Ag folks at Virginia Tech used Bifenthrin (Ortho Bug-B-Gon Max) with excellent results. Back to my research and hours online checking on Bifenthrin. I found that it works wonders for squash bugs and cuke beetles. I sprayed 2x (7 days apart) with the Bifenthrin and I'm happy with the results.

Am I 100% free of these monsters?? No. Today I shook my arch trellis pretty hard and instead of a swarm of cuke beetles I saw only a few AND I only had to squish ONE squash bug.

Surround does not kill bugs it makes it really difficult for them to lay eggs and to feed.
