Anyone grow garlic in 9b/10a?

I tried it the first year I got here, and it just rotted during the summer rains. I had someone tell me that they grew it in a huge pot with 50/50 builder's sand and compost. I can believe that, because in SC, our soil is nothing BUT silica sand (builder's sand) and we add compost, and the garlic does great. Of course, he also said he put the pots up on a grid of bricks for drainage.

Anyone grow garlic in pots? I'd love to grow it again. I love the flowers, but most of all, I love garlic! I may try a small pot this year.

Hi junkyardgirl,

I haven't done it yet, but I intend to try. I bookmarked a wonderfully informative site that has all the skinny on growing garlic, and what will grow in our heat. Not sure that I'm allowed to post a link though. If you email me, I can maybe steer you to some good info.

Hi - I've never had good results w/ garlic, tho I HAVE seen it growing nicely in someone's community garden bed here in St. Pete.

I understand variety is very important - as some are better adapted to our high humidity/diseases. I've been told that grocery store bulbs are just not a good starter source & you need to buy bulbs especially for growing.Also - it's a Fall-planted crop.

Here's what SESE sez:

**CHARACTERISTICS: Softneck garlics are more domesticated and have evolved from hardneck garlics. They have lost the ability to produce topsets, hence the center of the bulb has a soft braidable neck. Softneck garlics are more productive, more widely adapted, have better storage quality, and are easier to grow than hardneck garlics, but they are slightly less cold hardy in extreme northern areas. Clove count per bulb is much higher but many varieties have small interior cloves. We have had yields (by weight) as high as 16 to 1, but 5 or 8 to 1 is more typical. There are two horticultural groups of softneck garlics: the artichoke type and the silverskin type. Artichoke types are the largest, most widely adapted, and most productive, typically with 3 to 5 layers of cloves that give the bulb a lumpy appearance. Silverskin types have smooth, usually white bulb scales. They produce the most uniform and attractive bulbs, and are therefore popular for braiding. Cloves tend to be held tightly in the bulb and do not separate as easily as those of the artichoke type. Silverskin types are popular in western and southern states, but they also perform well in eastern states.

HARDINESS ZONES: Recommended for zones 3 to 9. **

I've had luck here in Central Texas with several types of artichoke varieties, such as Chet's Italian Red and Broadleaf Czech. I haven't tried any creoles yet but I've heard good things about them. What doesn't do well here are rocamboles. Don't even bother with those if you live in a warm climate. Purple stripes and porcelains are kind of so-so. Sometimes they do ok and sometimes they don't. Though your weather might not be as unpredictable as mine. I always grow several different kinds of garlic each year to hedge my bets. I second the recommendation for Gourmet Garlic Gardens. They have good advice on that website for growing garlic in hot climates.

It depends on where you live in the bay area and your exposure. Best scenerio is you live away from right on the bay,south of the Golden Gate by 10 miles to downtown San Jose,and you can then plant it as Bahia said,up against a hot wall or courtyard where heat builds up AND that bay breeze is blocked. Without a doubt you dont want it to be shaded by structures or trees. Would also help to have a stone mulch under it. Stones tends to be warmer and drier. T.P.,IMO,doesnt have to be as large as the tropics to be a showpiece.Just that unique fan shaped growth of leaves stands out. And if you get any trunk in a decent period,that's just more bonus! I dont care what others say. The difference in tropicalia growth here in the bay area can be SouCal like in the most favored areas. No frost and mid 70's to near 80 all summer is not what most people think we have.Most think of frigid San Francisco and that blustery wind and dense fog. I havent had a single plant that grows in SouCal easily,not also grow here in the eastbay.Not as large or as fast as in S.C., maybe-but growing. Mangos,Pachypodiums,Ficus like benjamina to petiolaris,even the Bo tree. When we get those once a decade freeze's,spend some time to cover and protect and your plants WILL survive.Not a bad trade off for such a northerly climate and a hour's time throwing blankets on plants once a decade!

Just for the heck of it, I broke apart a grocery store head of garlic and planted each clove. I did this last week and noticed each clove has sprouted dark green stems that are about 2 inches tall. Garlic spray helps ward off pests, so my crazy logic told me that growing garlic near pest-prone plants will help too. The jury is still out on both expirements. The worst case scenario is not that bad.

Have any of you had success with garlic in containers? I have a bulb with a lot of green leaves sprouted from it, just asking to be planted! Thank you!
