Whoa..pesticides on banana peels. This is the first time I have ever heard mention of pesticides from store bought products possibly being harmful to their worms. But Tracy is right. Other than organically sold produce, most fruits and vegetables sold in grocery stores have some pesticide residue. I have seen lists posted of the foods which are highest in pesticides and for that very reason I organic garden. However, I have used banana peelings because I never saw these on any of those lists. Now I have to give that some thought. I never use grass from chemically treated lawns in my outdoor compost bins, and I have been involved in several lengthy discussions about chemicals feed to cows and horses, and what effect they might have on composting their manures. But this is the first time I have come across a posting that suggests pesticides from grocery purchased produce might have an effect on worms or vermicomposting. I had to stop and give that one some thought. Althought Tracy's main concern here is for the worms,I had to go one step further. I vermicompost for three reasons: (1) using the spent media in gardening projects; and (2) using some of the worms in my garden; (3) feeding worms to my fish. Tracy's question made me stop and think what effect these pesticides may be having indirectly on the food from my garden, and the worms which I feed to my fish. I think much would depend on the type of pesticide which were used and how long the residual pesticide would remain in the environment. But from now on you can bet I will be rinsing the banana peels prior to blending them for my indoor compost bins. I think the rule of thumb is fifteen seconds.

Looks like fruitworm damage. From the FAQ section: Tomato Fruitworms - are also referred to as the Corn Earworm. They are green, brown, or pink with light stripes along sides and on back; up to 1 and 3/4 inches long and are the larvae of various moths. The moths lay eggs near the stem of the green fruit and within 1 week the hatched larvae bores into the fruit where it feeds. It may move from fruit to fruit until it is ready to fall to the ground where it pupates till the following spring. Discard portions of fruit that have earworms in them. Disk or rototill plants immediately after harvest. Organic/Biological Control: Parasitic Trichogramma sp. wasps parasitize tomato fruitworm eggs. Bt, (Bacillus thuringiensis) can be used for control of tomato fruitworm. Birds may feed on larvae. Moles and tilling destroy the pupae. Chemical Control: Sevin 5% dust. Treat every 5-7 days when fruit begins to set as once inside the fruit the pesticide has little or no effect. Continue as long as fruit is present, if needed.

I might have used glass paint. It would stay on better but since lightbulb you won't be moving it around much.There is a green crease(indent lines pumpkins have) line,you can just see it to the left of mouth about 1/2 in out. It is same distance out on other side too. Water down same green you used for leaves just a bit. I was loseing light by time i took the pic yesterday. Anyway be sure to go around the bulb & put about 6 lines going from about 1/2 in. from bottom of bulb to little below the leaves. It just gives it the "right" look. Have fun!! Jan
