What a blast from the past.

We are here in Overland Park, KS and stopped at a botanical center and WOW, many of these plants bring back memories.

For those that dont know these plants, they are called 'peonies' .

Or as they call them in Pittsburgh, "peenies." hehe Beautiful photo, Tony! Boy, I miss them! And forsythia. And tulips, daffodils, hostas, and hyacinths. But probably peonies most of all. I didn't see my first ones until I got married and moved to PA. I fell in love instantly, and have longed to grow them ever since I moved back to Florida.

Lovely peonies, Tony. I also miss those northern flowers. I had some gorgeous light pink ones I had to leave behind. Also the huge lilacs that surrounded my property. Those two always made the most beautiful bouquets that would fill our home with a lovely scent. Thanks for taking the time to share with us. Are you having a great vacation? Seen any rain? Moni, I recently bought a new trowel because I'd misplaced mine. Of course, the next day after I began using the new one, I found the old one buried under some mulch. I don't buy tools very often. I try to buy high-quality ones that will last a long time, and I buy them old and well-used or new. Often the old ones are higher quality than the newer ones. I did buy some Reemay-type floating row covers this winter to use to cover some of the squash plants this summer. George, I'm glad you're enjoying your Lee Valley Tools. Just holding that spading fork of yours in my hands made me want to run home, get on the website and order something--anything--from them. I'll probably talk myself into something from Lee Valley, even though I don't specifically "need" anything at this time. It is just so nice that someone is still making quality tools that can stand up to a heavy workload. Jay, The tools from Lee Valley are in a class by themselves. The moment you pick up a Lee Valley tool and hold it in your hand, you know you holding a heavy, old-fashioned (as in high-quality), tool that is made to last. They remind me of the tools my dad had in the 1960s, although I don't think Lee Valley existed back then. When I recommended Lee Valley to George a few months ago, I was just hoping their quality was the same as it always has been. When I held his new Lee Valley tools in my hands and looked at them at the plant swap, I knew that Lee Valley was still making high-quality tools. Their prices are somewhat shocking, but they are worth it. Hardin, We have a fiberglass-handled shovel, transplanting spade and fork that were Christmas gifts. I guess ours are about 10 years old now and still unbroken, uncracked, unchipped, etc. They are very durable, but if anything ever happens to them, I'll probably replace them with the wooden-handled ones from Lee Valley. I just like the old-fashioned feel of a wooden-handled tool, provided it is a good quality wood. Dawn

Rococco, sure. Sephora should have a BE counter and a tech to play with your face. I was in Chicago last night and dragged my makeup phobic friend into the BE Boutique at Woodfield, (Mecca itself, only two in the midwest I think) for a makeup application. Had to ply her with a glass of wine first. We'd been up since 5, driven 3 hours, then had a tedious all day conference - our 50s faces were not exactly dewey and fresh... When they were done, she looked great!! Another convert. BTW BE is "15 spf", but you use so very, very little that I doubt it is sufficient protection. Oh, and on the messiness of the powders. I'd forgotten to swirl the brush in a bit in the lid, and was kinda dunking it instead. Duh. The lid and the Kleenex tip did the trick. Thanks.

Thank you, everyone. Animal lovers are the best! There's another beautiful kitty at Rainbow Bridge today. You're right....you know when it's time. I probably should've taken her last night, but she still responded, and having seen her this way before (albeit before getting this old and such), I thought if there was the outside chance she was in recovery from her episode, I wanted her to have it. But this morning, I knew. I was supposed to drive hubby to the airport this morning, but told him I didn't want to make her wait any longer. He drove himself and I took her to the animal ER. I think it was easier, just me and her. I can deal with my own grief, but I wouldn't have been able to with his (his mom's dying too), so I guess it worked out as it should. I held her, cuddled in my arms, as the vet gave the injection, and they gave me a few minutes afterwards too. It was a peaceful room--sofa, low light, waterfall and soothing music in the background. I guess being an ER, they're more than prepared for this type of thing. If it'd been any other morning than Sunday, I could've made arrangements with my own vet clinic to have someone come to the house, but it just didn't work that way. I did call the ER and ask if they knew a vet on call who would make a housecall, but there's none in our area. Oh well....it is what it is. Now she doesn't have to make the looong move with us. Casey will always have a piece of my heart and always be my baby. She'll be the standard against which all future pets are measured. Now to have to answer family and friend's question "how are you doing?" I hate crying in front of people, but I can't imagine even mentioning her name without crying for awhile. Anyway, thanks SO much for all your support these last few months. I'll check back from time to time because I got used to following everyone's stories with their pets, etc. (even if I don't post much). I'll let you know when I get a new kitty to love, too. We'll get settled in our new location first, maybe take a trip or two since we haven't in about 4-5 yrs (since Casey got older and more "needy"). Gotta first find some wondeful neighbors I can trust to care for my pet when we're away....we have the best here where we are--I was sure going to miss them. Later, Tracey

Hi Marcia and Betsy,

Lilacs are all over the place and air is filled with their scent, its really nice here weather wise and landscaping too. Cant say much good about the traffic though.

ONly rain we had was coming here while in GA. I swear we went through a tornado, I never saw it soo bad on the road and ever so instantly. Hope its clear on way home.

MB is having a blast. She won first place with one of her quilts and I think second place with another. This is getting to be serious stuff !

Marcia, is that a BLACK snake in the slide show? Its black, so I assume it is.

In New Jersey, those are referred to as 'deer attractors.' Rarely do they get to the flower stage; the deer eat 'em as soon as you get that little ball of color on the right.

Tony, drive safe. Sure been lots of tornadic activity in the midwest and south lately so it's very possible you did drive thru one.

Tony, it looks like a rat snake to me. There are several species of them outside of Florida that we don't have here. I would guess a black rat snake. The head looks much bigger and it seems heavier bodied than our black racers. Nice pictures, all!

Ahhhhhhh, we had these in Illinois where I grew up. They must've been easy to grow because with 4 kids my Mom had no time to garden. 40 yrs later we still miss them.

The thing I remember most about peonies is they had ants so you had to be careful if you went to sniff them. LOL Nice pics. Have a nice trip.

The jatropha cuttings you gave me are turning into bushes :)

...Congratulations to MaryBeth for her success with her quilts! Way to go! I've always been in awe of people who quilt. Seems like such a monumental endeavor, but so beautiful when done.

Congrats to MaryBeth! I was still awake and finishing a very simple quilt at 1am last night and I was thinking of her beautiful and elaborate quilts. I'm so glad she's getting recognition for her skills!

I loved your pictures, Tony. I too grew up with peonies, tulips, lilacs, hostas, lily of the valley, etc. These are still some of my favorites and I'm sure I will always miss them.

Congrats to MB with her quilts and nice to know that someone has been able to "get out of Dodge" for a bit and relax.

In the area I grew up in, they called peonies "pineys". We had some in our yard that came from my grandmother's garden. Just the picture let me "smell" them again - thanks for the memory.
