Look what [literally] popped up at my house.

I'd posted on the bulb forum for an ID, but one of my friends knew what it was.

It seems I must have bought the discounted, "dying" plant at the grocery store. I sort of remember NOT buying tulips, because they don't get enough chill hours to come back. I don't actually remember getting the plant home and planting it, but I must have done so. I'm thinking it's been bought since March (maybe a Valentine's plant that never sold?), so I'm surprised it bloomed again this year. But I also don't remember any dying foliage sticking up from that area, so I'm pretty well confused about how it got there.

Nice surprise, anyway. I think there are six shoots total.

Is that a Curcuma petiolata (hidden ginger)? It sure is a pretty surprise!

Not to further confuse, but Stylophorum is rather rare in that part of the Chicago region. Chelidonium majus looks very much a smaller version of Stylophorum diphyllum. While I can't tell which it is by the photo, you can separate them easily once they fruit shortly after flowering. Chelidonium majus has a long, smooth fruit with no style while Stylophorum diphyllum has a shorter, bristly fruit with a long style.

LOL I got one of those one year and I thought it was pretty cool until I found out it was not just ragweed but Giant ragweed. So yes Carol's right, that's what it is.

First of all, forget the melafix. It causes irritation which makes the fish develop a stronger slime coat, but your fish is already stressed and does not need the added stress of excess slime in it's gills. When the fish popped, did he actually open up?? Can you see his insides? If so....no matter how good he's acting, do the kind thing and put him down. He will not recover. You can put him in a bag of water in the freezer for a slow peaceful death. If she has not actully popped open, there is still probably not much hope, but I'll suggest a couple of possible causes. First...it's not internal parasites. Internal parasites can vcause weight loss, but not swelling. If the fish is female, ovarian tumers are very common and can cause uneaven swelling. There is no cure for this. Dropsy also causes bloating and a pinecone look with sticking out scales. It's caused by in internal bacterial infection and the swelling is usually pretty uniform on both sides and often the eyes are a little bulgy looking too. This is rarely curable, but salted warm water canhelp. Any way you can post some pictures so I can get a better idea of what may be going on? I'm a certified koi health advisor, but goldies are pretty similar.

Jan, it occurred to me you might have been thinking of what some call Peruvian daffodils? I believe the flower is somewhat similar, though mine hasn't bloomed yet. They are also a hymenocallis (narcissifolia) but I'm thinking they aren't a Florida native, like the spider lily is. (Does anyone know for sure? Jerryattreezoo?) One of your friends told you what it was but you fail to tell us what it is, I'm wondering why you are keeping the plant name a secret from us? Is this a test for us to play 'guess the plant'?

Oh, haha. Sorry! It is a curcuma, though the variety is unknown to me.

Beautiful, they appear every year around this time, it certainly looks like Curcuma.

Its in the ginger family though so only a tulip in name. A lot of gingers die back when it's cold and pop up again in the spring.

LOL, I also had a curcuma I forgot about that has popped up for me this week. I had already planted something else right over where it was and then there it was sprouting up through a cuphea. Oopsie!

Though, after some thought I did remember it was a plant I bought on clearance back in May of last year. Wonder how many other forgotten plants are out there?

So, UPDATE!

I think I have solved the mystery of how this plant came to be. And it means I am not actually crazy (well, not all the way, at least)....

I just saw pots of those for sale at Lowes. I didn't notice the price. It appears they are hardy enough for my zone--maybe next year....
