Fireglow Japanese Maple

We live in Atlanta area and just planted a Fireglow Japanese Maple in May. Have been watering three times a week but just noticed leaf tips are scorched. It's planted in direct sun most of day. Do we need to water more frequently in this 90 degree weather?? Don't want to overwater and will need to get special permission with watering ban restrictions if we water more often. Thanks for any advice!

Congrats on your new fire glow. I have 2 of them. The leaf scorch is not caused by lack of water. In fact, once or twice a week is all that is needed. If you purchased your tree from a nursery (which one?) it may have been under a protective screen or tree canopy. If so, placing it in full sun may cause some scorch especially on young trees. This is normal.

As the tree ages and develops a more mature expansive root system this will no longer be a problem. Fire glow while holding its color very well in full sun will occasionally loose some of its red color in the heat of July and August.

Cut back on the watering. 2 or 3 times week for the first week or two. Then twice a week for the next 3 weeks. The once a week from then on as needed. Keep in mind to adjust your watering when it rains.

I planted my fire dragon last September. I am loving it! Lou, do you have any pictures of the Skinny Dragon? I also have one but it looks like a stick with leaves growing out of it right now. Magoo, I put a Murasaki Kiyohime in a pot on my front porch last weekend and now all my friends are accusing me of engaging in illegal agriculture. Jscaldwell, I do not think I would be worry about those unopened buds but I am an uber rookie with these trees so my opinion means nothing! Beautiful pictures everyone! i would do nothing until it leafs out in spring ... and probably.. not even then ... i cant tell what is graft.. and what is understock ... you PROBABLY have made the right choice.... there should be a leaf difference ... with JMs... i would go a little zen ... and not worry about a perfectly straight trunk .... just for the heck of it.. i would move the big tag down to the trunk ... laying on the ground.. for now ... so it doesnt scratch the branch in winter... the lower is tougher bark at this point ... personally .. i dont prune off anything for 2 or 3 years... except for broken stuff ... perhaps you ought to give it a break from pruning.. since you did what you called.. a lot of root surgery .... just a branch or two.. on something this size can be 50% of the canopy ... and that does not encourage root mass development ... every leaf is a food making machine.. to grow the roots.. to grow the tree ... if you keep cutting them off.. IMHO ... you are retarding the growth potential of the plant ... ken

For being planted in the middle of summer, your tree looks remarkably good. You've taken very good care of it helping it to settle in. I'd expect that one branch in the last photo was slightly damaged in transport or planting. NBD.

Yes, as long as the drainage is good, it should be fine. It is pretty much the equivalent of a couple of days of a constant downpour :-)) As long as the soil didn't puddle up and the water drained promptly, this is far less of a threat to the tree than it would have been to skip watering for a week or two!!
