Comments (16)I DESPISE squash bugs! But, since I don't want to kill pollinators or other beneficial insects, I have used companion planting, DE, soap sprays to control them. I also gather tips from fellow gardeners - LOVE the duct tape idea for the eggs, Gumby! One thing that works to keep the squash bugs from my cucumbers is planting them among tansy. It has worked for me every year, though I have had problems in another area of the garden with my squash and melons. Someone suggested to avoid using mulch for my squash, and that is what I will do this year, since the cukes get no mulch either - must be a connection. Row cover is another good tip, but I have not yet tried this. I would encourage you to try and avoid using pesticides, as the jury's still out on the connection betweeen their use and the problems with bee colony collapse. Depends on what study you read, and who put it out there, but my bet is that pesticide use cannot be ruled out as at least part of the cause....See MoreCan't get rid of cottony scale/ mealy bugs!
Comments (6)I agree with orchid126 and the use of the Bayer product, IMIDACLOPRID. I use it dispensed from the end of a hose. The leaves and the media are covered. Repeat applications according to the directions are the best way to manage your problems. Yeah, I know.... I have heard about insects "developing resistance". Actually, the bugs don't develp resistance. A few survive. Their progeny are more likely to be survivors. My local Home Depot sells MALATHION. I might give 'em a shot of that in a couple of weeks. The bugs have been "on" IMIDACLOPRID for almost 9 months now. After the MALATHION, I have a special treat for any survivors before autumn,CYGON 2E. And, of course, a final sequence of IMIDACLOPRID before the beginning of winter. --Stitz--...See Morehow to get rid of milkweed bugs?
Comments (13)Hi Jane, Don't despair. In a short time I had the red bugs under control. You probably have more plants than I do. Once a day, I patrol with my one inch paint brush & soapy water container. Flick what you can into the container. Flick in a few more tomorrow and the next day. Soon you will see less & less. Check all the tops. The bug nurseries are there. You must clear out the nurseries. I just bend the top gently over the container & flick the little ones in. The little ones ruin the blooms. You can even flick in the yellow aphids but they are a little harder because they stick to the leaves. Make sure your bugs are dead before you discard the water. The adults will try to hide under a leaf or move to the back of the stem. Be patient. Now I am seeing many more Cats & young Monarchs on healthier milkweed & that is the reward. We don't have cool temps in central Florida. Our milkweeds bloom all year round & there are young Monarchs still down here in the Summer. The red bugs are here all year & they are killing my milkweed. The red bugs are too quick to "smash them." The word is out by me to hide when I approach but I move slowly & scan for their whereabouts then plan my approach. In time I get them. If they fall down into the dirt, I grab them with my garden gloves & toss them into the container. Hang in there. My mom & I just love when the Monarchs come by to feed & rest each day....See Morehow to get rid of pill bugs??
Comments (84)I agree with the majority, the little beasties are a true pest! I always thought they were the workhorse of nature and that their good out-weighed the bad but no more! I have great soil and mulch with different kinds of things, pine needles, bark mulch and straw from my chickens. They have multiplied into the thousands. The last 2 years they have eaten off the sprouts of my Angel Trumpets so bad that they have failed to bloom for the last two years. They are in the dead stems from the previous years growth. I can't eliminate them unless I dig up the plant and cut away those stems. It is not happening because the clumps are very large and I worked hard to get them established. They are also in the hostas and in my tomatoes. They get in every house plant that I put out over the summer and I have to repot everything every year or lose them over the winter because the little turds eat the roots and leaves of my house plants. I am ready to use whatever I have to do to eliminate them. I have plenty of birds and toads, frogs and parasitic bugs in my garden, I encourage spiders and all other good bugs and even my chickens will not eat them. I tried and suffered the damage from my chickens in the hopes that they would eliminate the little buggers. Spinosad is a natural organic method of killing pests the same as Bt has been used to eliminate cabbage worms. It is also the ingredient in Comfortis that I give my dogs for flea control. I will try the beer but if it dosen't work I am going to bring out the big guns!!!...See Moregoggomobil
