Question about variegated liriope

I want to replant some Liriope that's in a barely visible spot in my front yard so that I can fill in a border up by the street that was somehow never finished. They're all the same size, and there are 6 of them, which is just what I need. My question is whether I can move them now, or not. Any tips are appreciated.

There are no stupid questions! So...what did you do?
I would move them now and divide them if I couldn't wait until fall.

I can't speak for your zone, but here in my zone (7b) its very hardy, just as much as the non-variegated kind. My variegated liriope stays nicely in clumps but the non-variegated tends to spread outside the clumps more readily, although not in any way invasively. Planted in full sun, either kind will need to be cut back to about 1" every late winter/early spring. Planted in shade it can sometimes go 2-3 years before needing the annual cut back.

Sharon, Looking at the picture you posted the original clumps of Liriope appear to have been planted around 6 inches apart. Over time they will grow, expand and knit together much like the picture. It is very hard to judge by a picture, but that is my guesstimate. Lou

daylilies and variegated liriope in combination?

humbleone- my first inclination would be to go with something in the boxwood family. I think a dark green leaf is a necessity in this situ. cause both daylilies and liriope have what i would characterize as a light green coloration, and 3 plants with the same is def. a no-no. Plus, they're very slow growing and can be maintained below the daylily background with minimal effort. It would depend on the shape and size of the planting area, but if it was just a single or a single grouping of evergreens that is to be planted then rheingold arborvitae, hinoki falsecypress or even some of the low junipers could work. I wouldn't use any of those if the planting bed was just a straight line with 3 rows of diff. plants though. Hard to make that look good with most plants, but the low formal boxwood hedge would pull it off nicely if it is a straight line border. (My initial impression was that the bed would be a straight line, such as along the side of the driveway...)

I am amazed. Again. I planted (what I think is monkey grass) in shade, under a mimosa tree, that has never bloomed. Never spread, still a clump, mayby a foot across now. I did the planting about 10 years ago. Must admit that the ground where it is planted is REALLY bad, used to be where a flour elevator stood sometime around the time of the land rushes. Right next to where a spur RR line went and the coal dump for the train engines. Still have coal come up out of the ground at times. Also either slag or meteorites. Haven't figured which yet. I have a very unusual yard. In spots the hard pan is only about two feet down. And I don't want to use dynamite, rofl. Also have a hand dug rock lined six feet across well, the dirt that came out of that was just dumped around it. Weeds do not grow well there. Back to monkey grass and other ground covers, I love when they take over in those places. I am trying to cover as much as I can with blue vinca as it seems to stand up to the bermuda, hiss,snarl. And was hoping for the same with the MG. So far, the only thing that really stands up to the weeds, that come in from the RR right of way, are day lilies. I really don't like using weed killer but as time goes on, I just lose the fight earlier every year. Well, I'm done whining. CSDC, I live in Newkirk. Hi.

Liriope is about the toughest stuff you can plant. If you water it in when you replant it it should have no difficulty surviving. Have you had enough rain to dig the holes, though?

I guess digging would be a little tricky right now.. anyway - here's a picture. I'd love some help on this. The last pic on the right is the area I need to work on, and it was taken at an angle instead of straight on. In any case, if anyone can make sense of it and give me some ideas .... I thought filling in would be easier than digging, then once I finished the liriope I wasn't sure what I was going to do. This entire area was covered in ivy when I moved in, so I pulled up most of it, then put down weed cover and threw some chips on top. Obviously I'm not going to be in any magazines, but I do want to do something. That corner is the only spot that gets any sun because my front yard is completely shaded by oak trees.

How about some bright color in that sunny spot? the carpet or knock out roses would give a big punch of long lasting color. They pair nicely with daylilies and something purple like salvia 'may night' or 'homestead' verbena.

Thanks for the feedback. I can't wait to dress up that corner because, again, I have a yard full of shade! I planted a small knock out rose already, it's hard to see in the picture. I don't have that much time to devote to it right now so I'm having to work on it as I can. Hopefully by this time next year it will at least not look so drab and pitiful. Unfortunately I don't have permission to get rid of the honeysuckle, or the fence, for that matter. Anyway, I like the idea of salvia and verbena, but I'm not crazy about daylilies there for some reason. A friend mentioned loropetalum, but I'm not sure about that either. It won't be hard to make it look better than it does now, but I do want to plant things that go well together, so I appreciate your ideas.

The Knock Out will be large one day (4'x4') and instead of mixing in a bunch of different shrubs I'd stick with the roses, they are more effective on mass.
One reason I mentioned Daylilies is because the mimic the shape of the lirope, maybe some Iris instead. I like to repeat form from one area of the garden to another, it helps draw the eye along.

ILM are you saying I should plant more roses of a different type? I planted the knock out because I love its resiliency and low maintenance, and I know it gets fairly big -- I really like the idea of going with more roses, but I wouldn't know where to start. As for continuity, that's what I'm going for, so I really appreciate all the input.

I can't really tell from the photo how large this one sunny spot is. But unless it's a really large area I would stay with the same rose you have (knock out) maybe add 2 more.

I have other roses in my gardens (mostly climbers) but I'm a big fan of the knock-out! Better living through breeding rather than chemicals!!
