Need a Small Tree or Shrub

I am removing all of the plants from a small bed that I have in the front yard. The azaleas that surround the bed are encroaching on it too much. So much that I will have room left for a shrub or small tree to be a focal point. The area gets half sun. the tree/shrub does not have to be evergreen. I do not want a hydrangea there. If it is a shurb, it has to have a lot of contrast to the surrounding azaleas so it will stand out. If it's a small tree, I want an interesting trunk. The azaleas range in height from 2-1/2 to 4 feet tall. The area where I want to put the tree/shrub is a semi-circle in front of the azaleas. Any suggestions? And would a Miss Kim lilac work well there or would it get too big?
