EEEEEKKKKK! I had one crawling on my tomato plants last year as I was picking them. I called my husband at work and stood guard over it for 3 1/2 hours till he got home to relocate the snake elsewhere (e.g., down in the swampy area over the big fence!!!). Snakes are good, but I don't want to see them. And I especially don't want to feel them!!!!

know how you feel. Moved a piece of board in the garden on Wednesday and out slithered a 3 ft copperhead! Ugh. Got animal control to relocate that one - hopefully many miles from where I live.

I was creeped out when I found a small snakeskin in one of my pots, as much as I respect snakes I certainly don't want to find one in my hand inadvertantly.

bmmalone, are you sure it was a copperhead? I saw something at the zoo's reptile house that said there are very few of these and that something else (forgot what) is often mistaken for copperheads. Either way I didn't know they would do that, I always figured if you called about a snake they would just come and kill it if they came at all. Nice to know they didn't. where did they relocate him to do you know?

Kathy, it was definately a copperhead. I have had several in my garden ( the first one I took to the Chattahoochee Nature Center so that they could confirm what it was). Now I know what they look like. We have had several road kill snakes in the neighborhood and a neighbor was bitten by a copperhead a few weeks ago. Animal control will come and remove the snake if it is contained. They will not catch the snake. The guy suggested that there are probably more in the yard (just what i wanted to hear!) and suggested that maybe a pair of snake tongs may come in handy. I have since spoken to a snake trapper (who actually keeps the copperheads as pets) and we talked about ways to keep them out etc etc. There is something that they can gput down which the snakes will not cross as it burns their bellies (harmless to cats and dogs) and is camphor based, which is what mothballs are made from. Rather than spend $200 on snake repellant I have bought some moth balls and will see what happens. With all this rain i am just hoping that they hopped into the creek and swam away!

Yep, could do with some 'normal' time in the garden! Family from England go home this week, so hoping that I get more time to be in the garden. How did you fare with all the rain that we have had. hopefully nothing washed away.

From what I am reading I got off easy. I only got about 3 inches from Dennis, plus about anohter 1/2 inch last night. Nothing washed away, but I still have trees standing in water from the ongoing problems I have been having. I have lost another autumn joy to rot. Neighbors had their foundation leak and have water in their basement so now with all my history of water issues I am paranoid about my basement since they were built at the same time.

I have some more autumn joy if you would like some. and still have the iris. Unfortunately my 'helper' in the garden cut down the trillium and solomans seal, so I'll have to wait for those to sprout again.
