what veggies can i plant now?

I dont think ive ever grow any veggies in the summer...

whats good for this time of year? (aside from okra)

DO a search on this topic - it was only recently discussed. Anyway I am planting hot peppers, okra, eggplant, bitter melon, luffa sponge (it is a veggie when young) Lots of edible gourds, malabar spinach in the shade. There are some corn that take the heat. Sweet potatoes, yuca,dasheen.
It is always a time to plant something!!

Here in Minneapolis, we are getting into the 80's nearly every day now. My sweet banana and Anaheim peppers have been bearing for some weeks and now the Cubanelles are starting to set, and I am getting all kinds of tomatoes daily off my two 4th of July plants. No squirrel problem this year for some reason. I have to admit to not having felt the need to install the window air conditioner this year, though. I have seen hotter summers, and some of my sweet potatoes aren't vining all that well, but then they didn't last year either. Just OHenry is running well. Vardeman and Jewel are not so vigorous as I would have hoped, but then there may be close to two months, at least a month and a half, before we get a freeze, too. Peppers don't get much more reliable than the Sweet bananas and the Anaheims; so if you are having problems getting fruits on your peppers consider them. They are the main types I plant anymore. Yesterday I planted onion seeds (Copra) for sets (an experiment), all kinds of coles including both leafy types and winter radishes and turnips, lettuce, and carrots. I may just move some tiger lily bulbils today and I am watching daylily seed pods which should ripen here very soon. I have never had any luck with the daylily seeds but one of these times I am going to get it right. I get volunteers; so somehow I just haven't found the knack yet. A while back in the garlic bed I harvested first, I planted some Minnesota midget muskmelons and the little squirts are blooming already. Very soon now I will start to work up beds for this fall's garlic, potato onion and tulip plantings. I think I will also give the elephants one more chance. I am going over to Core and away from peat moss this year. I don't can or freeze, since I do not have a big enough garden for that and a bit of everything else I would like to try. So now that garlic has been taken up, it is back to planting. :) BTW I especially like things I can snack on while working in the garden. Some days those snacks will be my whole set of meals. I use as few pesticides as possible; so a light washing with the wand is usually enough.

Climate information is normally given by USDA Growing Zones of 1-10. California has more detailed zone information called Sunset Zones. There are 24 Sunset Zones which are used in California and other western states to further give climate information. Sunset Zone Map for California I am guessing Sunset Zone 23, or USDA Zone 9a, which is similar to Houston, TX. You may find my Houston Planting Dates chart helpful. As always, I appreciate any comments, concerns, complaints, etc. about it. Right now, you can plant Cauliflower, Broccoli, and Brussels Sprouts transplants, Carrots, Parsnips, Turnips, and Rutabagas from seed, and onion sets (transplants). You're a bit late for green/wax/pole beans but you can probably still do so. You could conceivably plant potatoes if you have access to good seed potatoes. You're too late for tomatoes and peppers unless you can find large transplants of small-fruited varieties like cherries approx 2 feet tall in a 1 gallon pot. Mid-October is time to start seeding or planting lettuce, cabbage, spinach, and strawberry crowns/starts. Save English peas, snow peas, and sugar snap peas for December. Start tomato and pepper seeds in late December early January for March plant-out.

Odd that you should say"replanted" okra because once it matures it should bear till frost If you are say ing the deer ate the young plants then next time sprinkle them with black pepper. That should help.

Wow, maybe you didn't get that snowstorm yesterday! The old rule is: Plant peas when the forsythia blooms. I'd say the same for lettuce. Obviously, this will be a different time depending on where you are. Keep in mind that 'spring' does not refer to calendar dates, especially if your seeds come from the US, BC or UK! I ususually wait till the ground has dried out and warmed up a bit. They will grow a lot faster than planting in cold, wet soil.

Yardlong beans like the heat

Southern peas/beans like cow peas, crowder peas, black eye peas.

Tropical stuff this time of year

New Zealand Spinach seems to like the heat

Most of my melons, squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, gourds etc have all been in for a while now so I'm not sure if I would plant more of those now as they usually don't do so well for me during the rainy season. But you could always try some summer squash in a location that will get some light midday-afternoon shade and still probably get a harvest before it gets way too hot since summer squash and zucchini are quick crops.

So far, the only thing I see not mentioned here are the Everglades/Matt's/Red Currant tomatoes. Although they are only the size of your thumbnail they will bloom and set fruit even in the middle of the summer.

I just got seeds for everglades tomatoes.

I am growing bell peppers, watermelon, canteloupe, cucumber but those were all started a little over a month ago.

Mango's are a coming! One more month for ripe season, yes!

Oh hey - 1 thing that keeps going for me through every season is the 'wild' arugula (rucola selvatica). I only needed to buy it once as it self seeds easily. Pinetree has it..

Thanks for the ideas, i put in some eggplants today, i'll see what happens!
i WISH i could keep the Everglades tomatoes alive, i have had 5 or 6 plants already and have killed them all over the years, i have no idea why i cant keep them going.

what conditions do the sweet potatos need?
do you just cut up one from the store that has "eyes" on it?

linchat, if you want mangos come on over! i must have picked over 100 already, im running out of people to give them to, i might stop at one of the food banks tomorrow and see if they will take some.

has anyone grown garlic?
