Do yellow marigolds attract SVB ??

I was just told that the color yellow is what attracts the SVB. I have yellow marigolds planted throughout my squash beds....... Is this a problem?? Should I yank out the flowers??

Well first the color yellow is not what attracts the SVB, I have had many squash plants killed off by SVB long before they ever flowered. Second I have heard in many locations that marigolds are a companion plant for squash (I often have marigolds with my squash). Supposedly the marigolds help repel bugs and nematodes. Though honestly I haven't noticed any difference with or without marigolds (but I never have problems with bugs or nematodes either). In any case marigolds don't attract the SVB. Leave them in I am sure they look nice.

Any more ideas for small flowered plants? The herbs suggested are either biennials or flower too late for wave 1 of SVBs here. I love cosmos, so I'm all for planting some admidst the squash, but more is better if you ask me. SVBs are our big enemy, and I'd love to attract more parasitic wasps. I'm a little leery of importing insects, even beneficials, though. Two years ago, I let my son (my gardening buddy & a future biologist) get a praying mantis egg case. We both noticed a big reduction in overall insect activity last year - we even wondered if there were fewer bees of all sorts. Those PMs were sure something! We decided as much fun as they were to watch hatching (a bit gross, too - they ate one another) - it's just too imbalancing to our previously healthy ecosystem. I'd imagine parasitic wasps wouldn't be like dropping a bomb like PMs, though. Anyone have experience importing them? (the wasps)

There are flective foam dog bed liners you can buy to cover more area than just the width of foil, but also there is the silver malar emergency blanket that also can be used, very flimsy and hard to keep flat because it's light. I hope it won't burn your plants. I also found of an ear wax injector from a one of those coupon mailer promotional things. It injects and shoots in three different direcitons into the stem, it may be the right size to stick into the hollow veins of the squash and pumpkins to inject bt. Has anyone every used sevin powder, mixed it in with liquids, injected into stems for svb? Would it still harm the bees and predators that eat the squash bugs and eggs? I used bt, got very disappointed, but I didn't wrap the vine, buried it instead, and it kept popping up horshoe shaped, hump side facing upwards. I assume it rises naturally is why it did this, but it was impossible to bury the area I dug the bug out of. I finally put a rock on the dirt where I buried to it keep it underground, but it died a day afterward.

I too am strictly chemical-free. Last year I had my first real bout with SVBs, and I didn't know anything about killing the larvae and all that, so this was bound to be a bad year. This year I planted 20 summer squash. Every single one had SVB. I did at least one surgery on all of them. In the end I lost only five, which left me with plenty of fruit to give away to family and friends. I planted 25 winter squash, and none of them had SVBs. Only two of my pumpkins germinated. One got root rot, and the other I missed the SVB on until it was too late. I have removed all the dead squash from my property. Next year I'm ready to be more vigilant in checking early and often for frass. I'll probably get some BT also. I can deal with 75% success. I'll probably even plant a few more squash.

Question:"Threedodsmom (waht a cute name!), what is the yellow flower in your fist picture? And I love the lush look in your second picture. I see some dark red in there. What are they?" Answer: standard button garden mum planted last fall, blooming now in July. A happy coincidence ! Dark red touches are Jacob Cline monarda, knockout rose new growth showing, and canna "Wyoming" leaves. Second Question: "Threedogsmom, I have those exact daylilies that are in your first picture - rust with bright yellow - a gift with no name tag. I always wondered but assumed they are just a variety of Ditch Lily. Is that right, or do you have some other name for them?" Answer: They are not the common ditch lilies - you can see a ditch lily in my second pic down, to the right, a tall scape towards the front/right of the bed. You can see more pics in the "poised for lily explosion" thread I started. I do not remember the name of the burgundy and yellow daylilies in the first pic, but they have multiplied very well in just 2 years ! Got at Lowe's.

Hi guys,
the marigolds that are good for your gardens are"pot marigolds".
not so much the regular kind.
both have their merits.
but I think It's calendula AKA. pot marigolds that have the best of what you want.
seeds have been found in pharroh's tombs.
or so I've heard.
Don't quote me! :)
Also try fever few.
spreads like crazy by seeds but keeps flea beetles away here.

It has not been established that marigold repel insects.
I have seen my marigolds eaten by insects. It is not the color of flower, but the the smell and tast that is supposed to repell the insects. As I said, it is a myth , to me. There are a lot of herbs and even WEEDs that no insects will eat them. I pick some of them(weeds), chop them up and sprinkle around where I want, HOPING(!) the it will repel the insects?!?!? Maybe another myth or wishful thinking but then there is nothing to loose, weeds are free and plentiful.
