off topic - Georgia barreir islands

I am guessing that many of you who enjoy digging in the dirt might enjoy Georgia's natural spaces too.

I'm thinking about the Ga. coastal islands for a family reunion next summer. The age range is 8yrs to 85yrs (all active). I think that it would be nice to be close enough to Savannah for an afternoon trip too.

We'd like to rent a large house not be in a hotel.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have not been to the barrier islands, but I would like to mention that Savannah can be quite hot. We visited there last summer around the 2nd week in July and I could not believe how brutal it was. I'm sure the islands would be cooler, I just wanted to mention it in case you decide to pop into Savannah.

It's funny one year we went to Portland OR. It so happened to be the week they had record heat! It was in the 100s!

They are so cute! Perhaps you can buy another bird box and set it up elsewhere. The flying squirrels are nocturnal unlike the gray ones. I've also had so much damage from gray squirrels. They have wrecked shrubs, cut off branches and ruined an arborvitae. One removed the entire grafted portion of a Japanese maple. Bulbs and plants were dug up . We have flying squirrels but have not had a problem with them.

A forest will choke out a thicket, I often recomend that fruit and nut trees be planted on purpose, so that we lock up carbon and produce food for ourselves, and chocke out the brush plants that are unpleasent to walk through. When you go on a hike along a tail it seems that you are always either bordered by clearing/lawn or by a thicket, but once you break through that thicket you can useually travle quite quickly and easily and have plenty of space to move about. The main reasonfor removing trees and brush historicly wasn't to make things more pleasent, it was to open up land for agricultural use. with a field we can grow staple cerial grains, or legumes, or use it as pasture for animals, while some trees may provide seasonal food for some critters it takes alot of work to survive off of them year round (and trust me when I say thing, willow does not taste that good) . Our modenr day lawns were not contrived from thin air, you need to look at were they came from to understand how they fit in. Lawns are popular mainly in the south (sure, lots of people like them, but in the south they are sick for them) the south had a large portion of its caucasian inhabitants come from scotland (the southern drawl is very closely related to the scots accent) in schotland they have huge green field that are kept down to a few inches all summer long, this is because there is alot of rain and people raise sheep. Now, in the south there isn't as much water in the summer, and there aren't as many sheep, but people still liked the look of home so a lawn with mowers and irrigation is what they came up with.

Usually I read five or six nonfiction books for every one fiction, but here lately I've gone through a spurt of novel reading. Fiction takes so much more effort for me that now I'm ready to kick back and pamper myself for a while with the following: The Riddle and the Knight: In Search of Sir John Mandeville, the World's Greatest Traveller by Giles Milton - Sir John is suspected of being one of the biggest travelogue-writing frauds of all time; but was he really? The author attempts to find out by going himself to the places Mandeville claimed to have journeyed through. I just read a bit about Milton going to visit the Patriarchate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Istanbul (Constantinople in Mandeville's time) but he found himself in a seedy part of town and needed directions. Passing an Orthodox Church he stepped inside its door to find a woman in the vestibule. He asked her and after she told him which way to go, Milton asked her if she was a Romioi (a direct descendant of the Roman founders of Constantinople): "No," she said. "I'm Italian. From Bologna." She didn't look Italian, and I asked when she had moved to Istanbul. She paused for a moment, then said: "I think we moved here four centuries ago." If Milton keeps up this sort of thing, I'm going to love this book! The Degaev Affair by Richard Pipes (History, Biography) I'm not well-informed about Russian history, so this bio of an obscure-to-me political terrorist who witnessed the assassination of Tsar Alexander II and then directly helped plot the assassination of the chief of Russia's security organization ordinarily would not have attracted me. But I read the back cover anyway, for some reason, and was instantly intrigued because this terrorist, Sergei Degaev, eventually wound up at -- of all places! -- the University of South Dakota as an avuncular mathematics professor known as Alexander Pell. "Jolly little Pell" and his pleasant wife were evidently great favorites of his students, the faculty, and the townspeople. This guy was a terrorist? Huck's Raft: A History of American Childhood by Steven Mintz The romanticized notions and nostalgia for the halycon days of childhood can be dispensed with quite quickly when we realize that the whole idea of childhood as we think of it only goes back to around the first part of the twentieth century. Even Samuel Clemens who did more than any other American writer of his day to capture the essence of nineteenth-century boyhood was under no illusions that childhood, for the most part, was about one-tenth bliss and nine-tenths pure hell. This overview of the history of American childhood from the 17th century to the beginning of the 21st century looks to be fascinating -- I sure hope so.

I love Saint Simons and Jekyll. Jekyll is the calm, quiet place while Simons has more restaurants, hotels, stores and related amenities. Taken together they have something for everybody.

Ilikemud, for years we had our family reunions on Amelia Island which is actually in Florida but just over the line. We liked Amelia because it is not just a resort but also a place where regular people live. There's a high school, and if you're there in the summer, you'll see the marching band practicing for the fall football season. There's a little downtown with shops, a warf with fishing boats, a nice old bar, bike trails, the beach is nice and its not too far from Jacksonville. But the other nice thing is it is a close drive to the dock to catch the ferry for a day trip to Cumberland Island - a national seashore. We found the day trip was just enough of a wild seashore for the less outdoorsy folks. I haven't been in years so I don't now if it has changed.

If you want a home or condo rental at St. Simons or Jekyll Is., it would probably be best to contact a Real Estate agent in that area. There are a number of rental properties on St Simons, but unsure about Jekyll(a state owned island, where development is limited). Some owners and realtors often advertise rentals in the AJC.
Both have very good and well maintained beaches. A parking fee is necessary to enter Jekyll Is., so the larger beach there is usually less crowded. Jekyll is also home to the GA Sea Turtle Center and Historic homes of Millionaires, who owned the Island during the early 20th Century. Guided tours are available.
The Cumberland Is. National Seashore is about 30 minutes south and is accessible only by ferry from St. Marys, GA.
Visitors are limited to 300 daily, so if your plans include a visit, you may want to call ahead for availibility and reservations.
The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is also nearby and tours are also available.

All are great places to visit and enjoy wildlife and unspoiled areas.

Thanks for your input everyone.

I realize now that we might want to be in a B & B because our reunions are not for a entire week. I will check the web for B&Bs in the area.

I live in Camden County which is the Kingsland/St. Marys area. There are several B&Bs in St. Marys. Cumberland is a great day trip. Because it is tourist season you should check on availability. We are an hour and a half south of Savannah, just down I 95. Check in Savannah and on Tybee for accomadations as well. Enjoy your visit to our area.

This is late, but something you may want to consider for the future is renting the large plantation mansion on Sapelo Island. You take the ferry over and it's a beautiful experience.

Have you checked out Dafuskie Island? It's a bit more primitive but development is taking place.

I grew up in Savannah and the city in the summer can be brutal but the islands are cooler. Savannah has First Saturday festivals on the river and other things going on.

There are some very nice B&Bs within 90 miles of Savannah and I agree with contacting the rental agency or real estate agents for options. That's the kind of stuff that keeps them in business now.
