Best conditions for Hakone?

I bought a grass that says only "Hakone Gold" and I'm wondering what situation to put it in. I could put it in full sun or half shade (morning). Since it's yellow I'm thinking full sun. Could anybody confirm?

No. It wants more shade than sun.

Donn is right ~ definitely way more shade than sun.
If you want to do your own information search look under Hakonechloa macra (there are several named cultivars) and that should do the trick.

Oh yeah, if you don't have the ideal spot in the garden this grass looks fabulous in an ornamental pot.

Hi....I just rooted a cutting of this.Being the leaves are more hard and succulent,i have mine growing in a 4 inch clay pot,with equal parts growstones and coconut husk chips.I give it a good watering once a week,sometimes twice if its in the 90's.This hoya seems to like it so far! No new growth,but it has only been potted up for a month.This one probably doesn't want to be over watered,and can go dry for a bit based on the thickness of the leaves.maybe someone else can chime in!

This thread has come a long way ; The year was 2008. Bruce (esox07) and edymnion are two of the three familiar names to me. I, myself, was not then growing anything with more heat than Habanero. The topic ( Bhut best growing conditions ) has covered just about any issue about growing chili peppers, from seeds source, germination, growing under lights, potting soil,.. ..you name it. Bhut Jolokia is on my grow list in the future. Most people who have grown it , have described it as one of the tastiest super hots. Good reading stuff here. Seysonn

That is for sure not a Bhut Plus side is you gained working experience thru all this Bhuts are an OK strain to work with,hardly at the top of the Super ranks but still respectable heat. There are many other strains out here that will put even the best of bhut strains to same at the SHU level. Someone mentioned it back up the thread somewhere and it is very much incorrect,for novice eaters "its good enough",but both the heat and flavor are comparatively lacking compared to many other super strains currently available. Love your Firefighter!! Mine is Night Owl. I took a chance and didn't cover my roses (big pots in garage) with blankets like I usually do. Night Owl was right at the front of the garage, and all winter long the garage door was opened and closed. The door was often left opened while we shoveled the driveway. There was no cane damage at all. It seems to be one tough rose!! BTW I'm in zone 3. Carol

Hakone grass might take some morning sun, but I would avoid planting it in spots that get midday or afternoon sun. It is one of the few ornamental grasses that thrives in heavy shade. I have several clumps of Golden Hakone in my backyard, and the clumps that have grown the best are in the shadiest spots.

For some reason I am having the opposite experience with hakone aurea. The clumps that get afternoon sun have come back and are thriving, those in the shade are unhappy. Maybe in zone 6 the shade is too shady--or I just have some strange clumps of grass!

I planted 2 1 gal pots next to each other where they get full sun until 4-5:00 in the afternoon and so far it is tolerating the conditons--even with our 98-102 temps and LOW humidity that we have been having. THere is still a lot of summer for it to falter though. I have it planted where it gets hit by two different sets on my sprinkler system and I stagger the watering times so it get watered about every other day. So far it is acting like moist is more important than shade.
