Has anyone grown Alstroemeria here?

I love these as cut flowers- they last forever in a vase, and was drooling over them in a plant catalog. Has anyone grown them here? Any tips or advice?

I have a varigated form of this that I've been growing since last fall. It's planted right up next to this fence, so is getting quite a bit of shade. It's almost like a very low-growing, spreading groundcover, but the bloom stalks are over a couple of feet tall right now.

My mother loves cut flowers also so I potted her up a couple of pieces of this several months ago. Doesn't seem to have much in the way of a root system at all! Basically, just one long root off of each plant. I won't try potting up anymore for her until fall....

Oh, this was also an evergreen for me last year. I really like it!

I have three varieties; Freedom, Patricia Lynn and Sweet Laura. The sweet laura had done the best and then Freedom.
They are all in full sun.

I recently bought a variegated one that seems to be struggling. But now that I searched it some more I know I need to move it so that variety gets more shade.

M7 (Merton 7) is actually an ancient French apple bred in 1688 called "reinette doucin", or "doucin vert". Contrary to what some us websites claim, M7 is not a descendant of this apple, it actually IS the doucin vert, at least the virus free version from the malling research station's de-virusing efforts (heat treatment.) Doucin vert has been used as a rootstock for centuries, it's not exactly grown for its fruit. It's definitely NOT a McIntosh-like apple, that's really wishful thinking. See the picture below from the GRIN DB: I recognize this apple from abandoned trees in some orchards around here. It's really just livestock fodder, not even cider grade because it's not very juicy. But then again, it was an abandoned tree, neglected and not watered, so the apples from the rootstock suckers were small and dry. Now MM-111 is a bit closer to your description. It's a red McIntosh looking like apple, except that it's ribbed. And it's a pretty big apple too, looks juicy and tasty in the picture, but I've never tried it, it's most likely very close in taste to Northern Spy. MM-111 is derived from multiple crosses. The first one is Northern Spy X English Paradise, which was then crossed once more with Northern Spy. See the image below: So M7, forget it, graft them over to something decent unless you just want to feed your pigs, but MM-111, there you might have a better chance at a good cider and cooking apple.

Hello All, I have ordered ground nut tubers to plant in my garden, which is beside a creek. I am hoping that they do well, but I have one problem, MOLES! I have tilled up the spot where I am going to plant the tubers and they love to forage through newly turned ground searching for grubs and other insects. At least that is what I've heard. I found a tunnel leading to and from my sage plant which is also a perrenial, but haven't seen any damage to my sage (yet). I also heard that moles do not eat plants but can destroy their root system by the burrowing that is done in search of food. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on this? Will the moles eat my tubers? Thanks, Joe

Has anyone grown Acer floridanum (aka barbatum) in zone 6/7?

I can't comment on your zone, but I think your acidic soils would not be a problem. We have Acer barbatum here in MS, in natural stands in the Tombigbee National Forest, and it grows in our acidic soils. Perhaps you could find some growing at the northern end of its range, and those populations may be more cold hardy. It's a lovely tree, one I was seeking for quite awhile.

i would definitely put it in something very shallow, like not more then 2". that saucer looks very good, but it's too wide and it needs holes. i find plastic grocery containers best like half-pint deli tubs : i poke holes in them :). it looks like you transplanted it into a larger pot - so you can just shake off the loose soil but try not to disturb the root-ball or it will stall the growth.

I have Sweet Laura in full-sun, and am going to have a pink oe soon (no idea of the name). My Sweet Laura has taken 3 years to really get going, and even now struggles a bit. I'm thinking maybe some PM shade is the best for her.... I also have the red pittsocatta (not variegated) above, often called "Parrot Flower". It is perfectly hardy here and grows about anywhere!

I have Sweet Laura in a semi-shade spot and she is rampant. Four feet tall and spreading every year, from a four inch pot to two and a half feet in three years. She is blooming now with my Asian Creamsicle Lilies and they look wonderful together. I haven't tried to divide the plant, but I think after this year I will. I'm going to plant some of it behind a row of hostas under the dogwood and see how it does there.

The red and pink forms are beautiful. I like the airy look of the alstromerias.
