Root Collars

I have used heavy landscape fabric with holes cut through to restrain my ornamental grasses from spreading unhindered. This has worked great, as I have grasses like Miscanthus Varigatus, Pennisetum Japonicum, and many others that are very well behaved when planted like this. However for the last couple years, my Miscanthus Floridulus (aka M. Gigantus) has punched holes through 20 year landscape fabric, and even dived under my landscape edging to come up in the yard. Has any had any experience using root collars to keep ornamental grass in a controlled planting area? If so, have you noticed any negative effects like the clump dying out in places? I am also curious what you might have used in terms of materials, bottomless, or depth of collar. Please advise before I have to go Rambo on the grasses this year.
