New Florida Forum Logo Image? (Look!)

One of our Florida forum members, jenfm, recently posted a beautiful picture of a heron. Several of us thought it was the perfect image to replace our tired old logo of the maypop (at the top of the page).

We tried to change the image a couple years ago and for reasons that are still a little cloudy we couldn't seem to make it happen. But other forums have changed theirs and I think it's worth a try, especially for a picture that captures so many of the wonderful things about Florida. It's got the wildlife, the Live Oak, a palm tree, beautiful flowering vines and even semi-tropical plumeria. What more could you ask?

It's an election year so take a look and voice your opinion.

Is it time to retire the Maypop and bring in the Heron?

Yup, the picture was sent on July 25th. I'm thinking we must not be very high on the priority list :( I did email Tamara again on Sept 18 to see if they had forgotten about it, but this is what she wrote back to me: Hi Laurie, I just checked and it's still in the queue to be added. I'm sorry it's taking so long, but our tech team has been very busy -- but, I'm sure they will get to it soon. Thanks! Tamara Maybe by Christmas??????

Welcome to the fourm! I jump around to alot of different fourms mainly palms and cycads and plumerias, but also love hibiscus. I have 3 hibiscus all in pots. One of them Ive had for 3 years and I feel like its much more cold tolerant than any other tropical hibiscus. I took it inside 2 years ago because of how long it lasted in the fall and survived 2 frosts and a cool rainy fall with temps usually below 70. It made it through most of the first winter inside with no problems, but then it had so many white flies that I couldnt control them anymore so in late march I took it outside and hoped it would stay above freezing. It didnt on 2 occasions and one of those occasions brought temperatures down to 25 degrees. It looked dead, every leaf was gone, but by may leaves slowly came back and by June it flowered with over 8 flowers on it per day on most days. I brought it in again last year and it started to die around march at first slowly, but then rapidly so I brought it outside in early april as well as my croton which had a severe aphid problem and my lucky bamboo which also had some bug issues. A night got below freezing and both the croton and the lucky bamboo were toast, but the hibiscus made it through barely with the leaves tattered in the cold wind and rain we had the previous night. So far this year it hasnt flowered, but looks far from dead, and actually full so we will see. The second hibiscus I bought from a nursury this year even though it looked pretty pathetic. Now its still not a very full plant, but considering that, it does have very nice blooms with amazing flower colors which are peach and a red in the middle (its a double flowered hibiscus). The last one was from a friend and has nearly doubled in size since last year, but is not a heavy flowerer yet which is okay because its still pretty little and has lots of buds. Thats all the hibiscus I currently have. I dont have any pics of them yet, but if the rain ever stops maybe I can get some in! Good luck

hey tommy, i have thought about planting that filibusta in the ground. it will grow back as long as the spear stays intact. i have had i oiutside through snow storms and ice storms and its survived so far. the way i defeated the moles was by putting down chicken wire underground in the hole before planting the plams or cacti. the moles seem to just go around it and they leave my plants alone. i have other plants like salmon cannas, red castor, silver medt. fan palm, pygmy date palm with actual dates, elephant yuccas (6 feet tall), several types of tiger lilly, crape myrtles (20 feet tall), hens and chicks cactus, and several prickly pear varieties. i also have many potted tropical plants too..i live in the white house area and these plants do great even being 1000ft above sea level. my area sees strange weather events so these plants are great for xeriscaping. let me know if you want me to post somemore pix of my plants.. :)

Works for me! Birds, flowers...the only thing missing is a snake! Haha. And since I know not everyone feels the same way I do about THOSE, I'll vote for this! Anything to get rid of the maypop!

I'm all for it. Let's bring the forum into the 21st century. I'm curious the history of these little cartoon vignettes, they seem so old-fashioned. If you want to see a really funny one go the Bees forum. There's lots of lovely pictures around though that look much more modern. I mentioned the asian gardening, it's one of my favorites. Clematis has a pretty photo also.

If you are checking out other forum's logos, take a look at Far North Gardening. It's a picture of a perfect pink rose blossom surrounded by snow. Very pretty.

I vote for the new picture. Out with the maypop, which certainly doesn't indicate "Florida" to me like the tropical looking heron picture does.

I'll say yes as well, but considering the drought we've been stuck in for so long, perhaps a cactus and a buzzard would be more accurate.

I fully support the new logo proposal. The photo with the blue heron is gorgeous.

Oh Ricky, no buzzards, please, too terrifying for children, but cacti are beautiful. (Mine had 50 blooms this year.)

I hate to admit it but Mistiaggie may be right. We've been trying to change it for 2 years without much luck. But I remain hopeful!

I don't know if it would help to contact Tamara at GardenWeb but on the Far North forum one of their members posted her email address when they were trying to get their logo changed and it seems to have worked. Maybe that's what it takes. She hasn't answered my email yet but sometimes it takes a while on subjects like this. She was great and responded very quickly though when we had a problem with someone on the forum sending threatening emails to other members. So when you really need her to take action quickly, she does.
