planting pumpkins/it's been a while

Okay, I confess, it's been forever since I planted a pumpkin. The kids have been coming over and they're resurrecting the old field where we used to garden. I've got grandious ideas about a pumpkin patch with all different kinds of pumpkins. The cross pollinating thing is only something I need to worry about if I want to save seed, right???? I don't really want to end up with a field full of unidentfied squatters. I remember weird zucchini things showing up in years gone by....were they volunteers from fallen seed? hmmm....like I said it's been way too long. Any advice would be more than welcome! Thanks in advance.
