Jump Start Grasses Growing Early in Cold Spring Weather

Ornamental Grasses can reach knee high in Zone 5a by May, with most blooming by the end of August. I would like to jump start a few stands in hopes of enjoying blooms earlier in the season.

I have considered Water Walls, Solar Caps, Floating Row Covers, and Black Plastic to warm the air and immediate soil surface in the early Spring around April. I have considered watering with warm water to penetrate and deeply warm the roots.

Has anyone been successful at forcing ornamental grass to sprout up earlier or bloom sooner?

As a zone 2 gardener, I am constantly looking for methods to get plants growing faster, but honestly, I find it much easier to find plants that prefer the cooler season temps for early growth and blooms. I just took a look at some of my photos from last year and Deschampsia Schottland was blooming in my yard in early June, and Deschampsia Bronzelschier began in mid-June. I would think in zone 5A that would equal blooms in May? They're not giant sized plants, but with blooms look pretty decent at about 3'. This is a later photo, probably late July, but the blondest clumps are Schottland, and the blooms of Bronzelschier the first clump on the left. You can see the taller Karl Forester in the background. The pudgy heads drooping over in the front of the bed are Melica ciliata. I have some warm season grasses in there as well.

Wow! Great photos and information from Zone 2/3. Personal page with the raised beds is very fascinating. I believe the raised beds provide a little extra warming, and the tip to use cool season grasses is a good one. Miscanthus Nippon blooms in the first part of July. Calamagrostis Karl Forester blooms around the second week of June. Pennisetum Oriental blooms at the end of May. As I am trying to get blooms from Spring through Fall, I will likely use some early bloomers. Otherwise, I will likely experiment with my larger specimens of Miscanthus in hopes of finding a technique to get them up and growing sooner.

Would like to grow tomatos, cucumbers, squash, melons, roots crops, peas Cucumber, squash, melons, and most root crops are best direct seeded rather than used as transplants. Same goes for peas. This is not to say that some of them can't be started as transplants, just that most studies show they do quite a bit better if direct seeded. So that just leaves tomatoes on your list. ;) They should be started approx. 6-8 weeks before your transplant out date. Starting transplants months earlier, unless one has quite the ideal set-up such as a greenhouse would provide, only results in spindly, leggy transplants that are stressed. They don't tolerate the required hardening-off period and don't transplant well and are often more susceptible to disease and pest problems because of the stress they have endured. Dave

"This engine is a 2 year old shortblock" "I took the carb apart and let it soak in SeaFoam overnight" OK, shortblock has nothing to do with a dirty old plugged up carb. You stated this was a gravity feed carb. so it still dirty, it an't gravity feeding enough to start on it own. Soaking over night with sea foam is not enough. You have to use Pressurized solvent that contains, acrtone, xylene, ketone just to name a few, this will enable it to break apart and blast the gum or tarnish through the small passages of the carb. (pressurized carb. cleaner was specific designed to do the job, even comes with a little red nozzle to stick right on the small passages to blow out, USE SAFETY GOGGLES cause if you don't get it lined up it will blow back in you face!, I would also read all the instructions and warnings on the can before I used it!)And you still probably need to use a fine piece of wire to ensure you unblock the fine metered curcuits throughout the intards of the carb. Soaking was an old method which used harsh chemicals that would melt away anything but metal and some time even soft metal as well if you left it in long enough. These chemicals are too dangerous and were outlawed back in the early 80's for use shade tree mechanic's if I remember correctly. If you know how to prime and it don't stay running the carb. is STILL dirty or GUMMED up.

MeyerMike, generally we get normal high temps by by averaging the temps. But low and high temp swings are part of normal as long as there are not too many records broke. I know the fustration, but the Northeast is suppose to get these little cool/cold snaps or we would just keep heating up. As you drive southward down the east coast the cold snap reduces its intensity and duration. Yes, I agree last year was abnormally cool for us which made it worst for northern areas I figured. Last year things were way cooler and slower here in metro New York. Everything has a head start this year like TZ said, what is unusual is that everything is blooming/opening at once and not in stages. We also keep getting days in the 70s which I like, but they just happen and are not forecast very well - like Thurday in suddenly going to be warm.

I have black pots in sizes ranging from one gallon to HUGE nursery-size pots, and that's what I always use. Even with the big ones, I always put a rock (which I have all over my perennial beds!) or a brick on top of each one--just to be SURE they don't blow away (in the last couple days I'm surprised my rocks and bricks aren't blowing away!), so in some cases the hole is covered, but other times there are several holes and some are open, and unless the foliage is touching the plastic, I've never had a problem with anything freezing. Knock on wood--I guess! If we get a SUDDEN drop from "warm" to single-digits, I'm not sure much of anything will protect tender plants that are "growing before their time!" Corrugated cardboard boxes would provide pretty good insulation--but if it's raining or snowing, they'd need to be covered with plastic! I'm not trying to actually keep the plants "warm," and I figure the "heat" from the soil will keep the air inside of the pots from getting too far below freezing. I got all my ducks--I mean pots--in a row today, in anticipation of covering my bleeding heart and some lilies I already have coming up tomorrow nite. Possibly a couple other things, but not many. Most perennials will be fine, and it sounds like we ARE gonna get some snow before it gets very cold, so that should protect pretty much everything--and if the pots get a covering of snow, so much the better. But my real problem this time is going to be figuring out how to keep all my blooming (hollow stem!) daffodils from bending, irretrievably, over! They can take incredible cold, but they cannot take the weight of snow! Still contemplating just exactly what I'm gonna try with them this time! I'm pretty sure the one patch is too big to get even my biggest pot over them all! Am considering a couple things, and I have a whole nite to Sleep On It! Zach, I have Agastache that's starting to grow, and that's not one of the things I'm worried about. Unless yours is more than a few inches high already, I think it should be fine on its own. Keep us posted on your progress, please. It sounds like a fascinating experiment. I didn't search hard, but found no reference at all to 'forcing' ornamental grasses. Maybe some greenhouse growers will see the thread, and pipe in with their experiences.

I see two potential problems with your experiment.
Forcing for earlier growth may result in frost damage. New grass shoots & leaves are particularly suseptable to late frosts.
Problem two,grasses that bloom earlier in the season often = grasses that produce viable seed. Not good :o(

Personally, I am happier with the later blooming varieties. Warm season grasses for me are things of the autumn & more special to me because they bloom when little else does .....
