Baby Blues had a 5x5 polytepal today - I'd never seen that before

Seal of Approval continues to look good this year - I'm so glad treating for thrips worked!

I like that Siloam Rose Dawn has smaller foliage to match its shorter scapes and small flowers. (Unlike Siloam David Kirchhoff, which has a very pretty flower, but I think its leaves are too big in proportion.)

Sings the Blues had a visitor this morning - a preying mantis

We have lots of these little guys in our yard - they're sort of cute in a creepy way.

Just gorgeous, as usual. I remember seeing pictures of Pony when I first discovered daylilies, but I haven't seen any in a while. I think it's such a cute one! Seal of Approval just gets better and better. I read that it's a nocturnal. Does that mean it's just open at night?

Isn't that BB something? You've got some beauties today, and your second story garden shot is sensational!!! What a view....I'd probably hang out up there just looking at the beauty all day, if I were you!! :)

Jan, OH MY GOSH and JUMPIN' JEHOSEPHATS! Will you adopt me? Seriously, those pictures are just awesome, those you posted here as well as on photobucket. Thanks everyone for the comments. Karen: Send me an email with your info and I'll mail them to you. I cut off 10 of the greyish/black pods this morning after reading your post. Have the pods on a paper towel drying before I open them up and check the seeds and see how many there are. We had downpours of rain last night and early this morning. Julia

Debra, Yes, Painting the Roses Red has been splotchy, in fact two more blooms this morning. They weren't open all the way when I left for work but both look like thery are going to be splotchy and the temps have been really cool but it's suppose to warm up here later in the week so maybe they will improve. Thanks carol! Evelyn is quite gorgeous. Austin's do want to get huge here and lots throw out those crazy long canes but I hope to cut them short after each flush next yr to see if it'll help. I do love them. Sorry you have to keep getting rid of them but the HTs are gorgeous too as well as all the others. It's just a beautiful hobby we share!! I love the dahlia too!! Thanks again!!

Love them all! We have baby praying mantis's all over our yard too! I think they are cute, if you get a brave one that dosen't run, they try to box you, my kids think thats funny. Mystical Rainbow is beautiful, ive got to get that one. Ive seen so many pretty clump shots of it. Love the pic from your window, now we can see your whole back yard!
BTW- what did you use to get rid of those darn thrips? Spraying didn't work for me, they didn't stay long, but did lots of damage. -Jessica

Laurie - I'd forgotten that Seal of Approval was nocturnal and an extended bloom - it seems to open about the same time in the morning as the rest of the daylilies. Here's a definition of nocturnal bloom from the AHS website. I have noticed that Seal of Approval still looks pretty good when I go out to deadhead (livehead?) all the daylilies just before dark so they're fresh in the morning.

Jan - Baby Blues looks different every day - polytepalling, trying to double. With how hot it is today, it is a lot nicer to look at the garden from indoors!

Jessica - since we're both in MD, maybe in the spring we could do a trade - I have enough of Mystical Rainbow to divide and you have a lot of beautiful lavenders. That isn't the whole backyard, but the other side doesn't look as good (swings for the kids etc.)
I treated Seal of Approval with Bonide Systemic Insect Control granules (2% Di-Syston). I only treated the 2 plants that had been most attacked by thrips in the past because it has some serious warnings on it. I treated in mid-April and again about month later. What did you use?

abbiejan - Driving Me Wild and Pony are both 26" tall, DMW has a 5.5" flower and Pony's is 5".

WOW, These are all so beautiful.can't pick a favorite as they all gorgeous.may I ask dumb question? What is meant by "Polytepal"? I am pretty new to daylilies.

Jean - a polytepal daylily has more than the normal amount of 3 petals and 3 sepals that a daylily usually has. Baby Blues had 5 petals and 5 sepals in that top photo, which I hardly ever see. 4 petals and 4 sepals is more common. Some hybridizers (for example Bobby Baxter) are trying to get daylilies that are consistently polytepal, rather than just having one polytepal bloom now and then.

Juliet;Thank you for answering my question.It wasn't what I thought it was.I thought what was meant is the little plants you some times get growing out the side of a scape.A extra little plantlet.My Buttered Popcorn has a little plant growing on the side of 2 scapes,and one of my Little Wart's has one growing on a scape that is making buds on it.Weird stuff.

Jean - what you are thinking of is proliferations. I seem to be getting more of them this year too - I wonder why? You can root them and they will be exactly the same as the mother plant. Here's a link with more info - if you click on Lee Pickle's article, he explains how he makes proliferations into new plants.

Juliet - I love the color range of this whole group. Did you get them all from different sources? Can you recommend a source that has several of them?

fgoldberg - I got them all from different places, but Marietta Gardens has Baby Blues, Driving Me Wild, Mystical Rainbow, Seal of Approval (it seems expensive there) and Siloam David Kirchhoff. Homestead Farms has Baby Blues, Driving Me Wild, Pony and Sings the Blues. I've ordered from both and been happy with my orders.

Also, if I remember correctly you live in Montgomery County - our daylily club is having a sale at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton on August 11 at 9 am (everything's $5 per double fan) and I'm going to try to divide Siloam David Kirchhoff and Sings the Blues for that sale. (Let me know if you want more info.)
