Something is eating my Southern Magnolia

I am growing a Southern Magnolia (Braken Brown Beauty) here in coastal Massachusetts. The tree has been in the ground for about 5 years and is about 15 feet tall. I just noticed that many of the leaves (old and new) have numerous small holes punched through them. The holes are distributed more or less randomly around the leaves. I also noticed a small black insect--perhaps a beetle of some sort--on some leaves. Do you know what may be causing this and should I do something about it? I thought I would post this question on your forum since y'all have much more experience with this tree than my fellow northern gardeners. Thanks for your help.
