I think this Top Ten Plants for Georgia is ridiculous

There, I've said it. This is from a link in this morning's AJC.

There is so much misinformation floating around. I'd like your opinions on these 'top ten'.

Yes, I would like to see other opinions, too. I have been appalled to see invasive species plants on some lists. On the subject, i aquired an akebia vine, have read some negatives about the invasiveness of it. I was so excited, as have been searching for it since moving here 3 years ago. Should I just kill it or plant it next to the porch?

I never felt that information put out by Tina Samuels was very accurate. She did a native plant book for Georgia that had issues in the content.

While those are certainly good plants, I would not describe them as top ten plants for Georgia even in the world of native plants. Georgia is a huge state and no single list will do for the range of environments we have.

Glo - Thanks for reassuring me! I hope your move is awesome! My husband has wanted to move us to Colorado for years and hasn't managed to quite convince me yet, although I think it's absolutely wonderful there. LOL So, Winter Solstice is the same everywhere? (LOL)... I guess you're seeing how little I know... Nancy - Thanks for the tip! I am gonna have to watch the lead hand myself as I way oversowed my cantaloupes this fall. The poor babies are fighting each other and giving me 2 to 5 inches fruits that don't look like they're EVER going to full ripen. I will be much more careful in the future. I'll try to not get TOO excited when I go to plant. LOL Carrie - Wow! That's some really good info. That's exactly the kind of thing I was worried about. I'm grateful for the heads up. Liz - LIZ!!! Hey, girl! Fancy meeting you here and there and now here! hee hee... The whole last paragraph of what you wrote is exactly what is concerning me. I know that I personally wear shorts through-out almost the whole winter except for those few crazy days that we see. 50's or what have you is not cold to me... We do get the occasional freeze, but then a week or two later at most you could have a 70+ degree high! All this in the same few days / weeks / months... it's SO crazy! Oh, and if they're having a plantswap around the 8th of December as well, I sure want to know as I'll be out that way. :-) Blessings, Angela

I've seen some charming, wonderful, take-your-breath-away cottage style gardens in England and Scotland. (Wish I could post some of the photos, but they are of someone else's house. KWIM?) The ones I'm remembering didn't always have the trellis, arbor or fences, although some were in small yard enclosures. Abundance of blooms in a variety of color were the biggest part of the charm. Something moss covered seems to be necessary, as well. That and a geniune English cottage to set the thing off! (Can you imagine a thatched roof during a Texas summer? Yikes!) Just as someone else said, different climates demand different plant material. We use what will work here. Maybe an American style cottage garden has the trellis and arbor. I would think an American style CG would not have many, if any, clipped shrubs. We are the rebels, after all. :0) Great thread. I've enjoyed reading everyone's responses.

Have decided that ten just will not do has to be the top fifty at least... lol. visited Korths about a month ago and his seedling beds are FANTASTIC. Phil and his wife have some exciting new babies and some of the babies have babies. It all just takes your breath away. Just bought Painting the Roses Red... it's so wonderfully toothy. also Flame Resistant a new Hensley intro it positively glows with the orange veining. Sorry to say tho... I have contracted the deadly Daylily sickness, I have to stop looking cause I buy buy buy.

My Sagae is not even one of my top ten favorites!

So I am looking at my three Sagae crowns. The elongated crown has been shortened. I cut off what I considered rot. This is the rotted part. And this is what it looks like cut off: I did cut off a bit more because the bottom was a bit soft and there are no roots. But I am left with about a 2 inch long crown. You (Bruce) suggested cutting the majority of the crown off leaving some roots on the main crown. I can do that but I won't have as many roots as you have in your dividing thread. I am thinking I can cut about an inch and a half off of this crown. And with that piece I can cut it into two pieces for planting. It would be most interesting to see if these pieces grow. I imagine I would just cover it lightly with soil. The second crown looks like this: It's about one inch long. Ok---if I am going to think like Bruce---then I think he would say to cut a piece off and you have an extra plant! So if you cut the piece off, then the main crown will be stimulated to grow? The third crown is not looking that great. I was afraid to cut part of it off as I wouldn't have many roots left. The crown does seem firm though. Actually, when I really think about it, I don't think I have much choice but to remove part of the crown and roots. But I am going to do the bleach soak overnight and tackle the planting and this problem tomorrow! What's my goal here? To make this Sagae one of my top ten favorites. It was given to me by another hosta enthusiast. He shared his favorite hosta with me! I would love to be able to tell him that his hosta is one of my favorites too! His garden was the first hosta garden I ever visited. It holds a special place in my heart!

IMO I don't agree with the Trumpet Creeper, Catawba or the Wisteria. At least not down here in the southern part of Georgia. The Violet, not real sure of. I think thats what I've been trying to get rid of.

I would also not classify these as a general top 10 plants at all. Some of them are wonderful garden plants, some are wonderful on larger properties, some do better in some parts of the state than others but I don't feel they are the top 10. Tina Samuels book is meh, I totally agree with Esh.

The violet is a great plant, good looking and pretty well behaved, and native to about the upper 2/3 of the state. Here's one of mine.
It's not the same thing as other lobed-leaf violets; it is very finely dissected.

When I originally posted, remember being in a very cranky mood. Mea culpa again and again.

Think I'm just growing tired of poorly presented material, page fillers, overreaching authors. I'm very glad I didn't write the article.

I agree with esh, I would not put any of those in a top ten list for Ga. Makes me wonder if this lady has actually ever gardened at all.

The only one of the mentioned that I would agree with is the Black-Eye Susan because it does weather our climate well and puts out a nice display. But then after reading her column again she is stating "Native plants" or plants growing wild.
