Tomatoes for Seed Saving

Hi everyone, here is a picture of the tomatoes that I plan on saving seeds for:

1. Goji - great production

2. Goose Creek - small plant, all-purpose tomato

3. Aliana - favorite for salads

4. T Smudge - tasty

5. Romi - bigger than cherry

6. Armenian Cucumbers & Hawaiian Tomatoes - these are the ones I am growing for the summer

The photo shows what I harvested today, which is the third harvest for the above selection of the season.

Um...How does one go about saving tomato seeds? I am really trying to get away from buying plants at Home Depot.

You can save seeds from heirloom tomatoes (they come true from seed)

All I can say is that I've never worried about color differences, and I've never really noticed size differences (except between different varieties). What's your concern? I can't really see anything to worry about other than poorer germination rates, but I've always had plenty good enough germ, and if I were worried about having enough plants germinate then I wouldn't want to discard any ahead of time. If some seeds don't germinate that's no problem for me so long as I have enough that do.

It doesn't matter what tomatoes you save them from as long as they are ripe. It is also important to save seeds from a few tomatoes if possible for a couple reasons. One is one tomato may not have lots of viable seeds, and two, crossing is low with tomatoes, but you don't want to get unlucky and have picked that tomato one with crossed seeds. Remy

Wow, ya'll are quick! Thanks, I'll check them out! (I forgot there is a seed saving forum, lol) I wrote the FAQs in the Seed Saving Forum, and to this day is you google "how to save tomato seeds" the first link to pop up is my FAQ on fermentation, but I have long since abandoned fermentation because it can have inconsistant results, especially with beginners, who complain about duration of fermentation, the appearance, the cups sitting for days and attracting flies, etc. I now only clean tomato seeds with a sanitizing soak and scrub--and that is the 'easy tomato seed saving' method in the link above from WinterSown.Org. The process is 35 minutes, start to finish, with a half-hour break within that too. T

Nice collection, Silvia. I should be growing Smudge, after all my cats are Tootie and Smudge! lol Could you look at the post 'newbie tomato results' now on page 2. See if the tomato I thought was 'Sweetie' from you looks like any other you grew. Also, tell me what you think of that Yellow Giant oddball. I can't find your email address...thanks dear!

In the picture that I am showing there are the Oxhearts tomatoes (my favorites) and probably the one you have with the odd shape.
I have German Red Strawberry, Cuore di Bue, Brad's Black Heart.
The small tomatoes not on the dish, are Pink Ping Pong and they look similar to the ones you have. Notice the cracking, even though is small tomato.
The variety Sweetie, is a large pink beefsteak.

And I will be sending you seeds for the T.Smudge when they are ready, they sure are pretty and even being a bigger tomato doesn't have any cracks.

Never had a Yellow one before though.... Don't think I've seen them for sale here.... Hummmmm Will have to have a look when I next go shopping
