Getting rid of fleas around house plants.
Comments (13)I'm not sure what you have (fungus gnats I've had were all too willing to fly) but I'm pretty sure of what you don't have... fleas. Fleas don't have wings, and I see no reason why they'd want to hang around houseplants instead of you. Also, the original poster said that he could easily catch and kill them. Fleas in my experience have extremely hard exoskeletons. When my sister brought a stowaway back with her from her trip, I was able to pin it down, but couldn't crush it until I found a really tough tool of some sort, hammer maybe? Point being, I had to crush it with something metal against something metal, in this case being the top of a dryer. Try those sticky yellow cards to see if you can catch any, and then maybe you can ID them. Or you can make your own using a yellow post-it note covered in vaseline. If they look like little flies (kinda like fruit flies, but frailer) then you probably have fungus gnats. They're not super hard to get rid of, just try to limit your watering. Wait until the first inch or so of soil on top is dry before watering again. I seem to recall the larva can only live in that top inch, which has to stay moist. Using mosquito dunks is another way to get rid of them. Good luck....See Morehow do I get rid of fleas with no pesticides.
Comments (12)I figured out why my flea-less dog got fleas all of a sudden. It is his dog food! Nutro has changed it formula and dogs all over the country are getting ill and some dying. Ill dogs attract fleas. Here are a few links about the sickness nutro is causing. http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/nutro.html http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/04/pet_food_recalls93.html http://www.rateitall.com/i-24984-nutro.aspx http://www.voy.com/211161/ Nutro was bought out by mars candy and iams (we are feeding our cat) was bought out by Purina. We are in the process of switching the dog to evo and the cat to merrick. Evo does not have fish flavors (that the cat prefers). Both are grain free formulas. The dog gets raw organ and beef 2 times a day, but nutro only in the morning. Hubby hates the thought of touching the raw stuff. Can't get the cat interested in the raw food at all Want to switch your animal to a better brand check out this link http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ They only rate the dog foods, but I would guess a good quality dog food brand might also make good cat foods. the deaths of dogs from poor quality dog foods saddens me greatly. the symptoms our dog has in common with the other ill dogs are peeing in the house diarrhea dark urine red itchy skin vomits up undigested food occasionally dry heaves Unfortunately, other's dogs have died from liver and or kidney failure, and some only after eating the new brand for only for 4 days. I would never post something bad about a company like this except I can see the same symptoms in my corgi. The vet assumes urinary tract infection but can't get urine from him to test. Antibiotics no helping. If someone wants to start a thread on a forum please do so. This info needs to get out! please post the link to the new post here. so I other's can find it easier....See MoreGetting rid of fleas in the yard and the house
Comments (24)Ok we are back to the feral cats. What will eat the mice, rats, squirrels, and other things when the cats are gone. I believe I have read that cyotes are becoming a problem in many cities. We have resident bobcats, cougars, skunks, and lots of racoons in this area. I do not feed cats outside but am aware that in areas that have removed the cats others will move in to eat the expanding food supply. I would rather have the cats than some of the others. The catch and release programs have helped reduce the population of feral cats by neutering them. Something that the original owners did not do. If you have heard of a person releasing or dumping a cat normally with kittens have you spoke up? If not you are a major part of the problem. If more people spoke up the next time someone wants to show the joy of birth to their children with out a thought of what to do will the kittens less cats would be dumped. Even no kill shelters must cull the older and less healthy cats to make room for more. When you see a cat with the tip of it's ear cut off this is a sign that it was caught, given shots, fixed then released. To reduce the number of feral cats and give all cats a good chance at life humans need to become more active and vocal. I have wondered if a poll was done what animal's would people pick to replace the outdoor cats. Since removing the cats would create a vacuum and nature does not like a vacuum what would the posters like to replace the cats? I would like never to have homeless cat but know without outdoor cats we could go back to the middle ages when mice and rats were everywhere because people did not like cats and thought they were bad luck....See More80% weeds in the yard - how to get rid of them?
Comments (5)I would probably overseed this fall and in spring use a pre emergent herbicide like corn gluten meal. That would be the organic way. Or instead of corn gluten meal you could use a chemical pre emergent herbicide in spring. I have the same problem, but with putting in new flower beds etc. I will not get to mine until this fall either. I will probably put down a 1/4" layer of compost and over seed this fall around the end of September in zone 5. Then in spring I will use the corn gluten meal probably around the end of March or so unless I find out a better time. Lee...See Moregatormomx2
