My biggest tomato ever!

It's a Monomakh's Hat from seed Sylvia gave me at last fall's garden party. It weighs around two pounds. Those are Big Beefs lined up with it. I did nothing special (I think Sylvia put a spell on the seeds). In fact it is a poor looking plant with thin scraggly foliage with only 9 tomatoes, none of the others approaching this size. I'll report on taste later.

Those are beautiful. None of my Better Boys are ripe yet. I have one that's exceptionally-sized though. I'll send a picture when it's ripe if nothing happens to it before then.

I'm swimming in SuperSweet 100 cherry tomatoes. Can't eat them fast enough to keep up with production.

I have some close to two pounds also, they have great flavor! eat them while firm to the touch and pink, they are my favorite for sandwiches and tomato sauce because they are so meaty. They are early to ripen and the foliage on the oxhearts is always wispy like that, some seasons they produce better than others.

I made barley/tomato risotto with feta cheese with just one tomato, the are that big.:)

It's either a tomato or tobacco hornworm. They are voracious eaters. I can almost guarantee you the one your dog ate is not the only one. They so closely match the color of tomato leaves (and datura leaves) that they can be hard to see. You can either pick them off, or spray your plants with BT (the least toxic way to kill caterpillars). When I said voracious...if you miss a big one like that--it could strip the entire Datura overnight. I am unsure about the toxicity of BT to dogs (it's a bacteria that kills caterpillars when it's ingested so it takes about 24 hours to work and will need to be reapplied periodically). If I were you, I'd pin up your pet until the spray is dry. I have never seen a blue jay die from eating tomato hornworms, so I think it unlikely that it will harm your pet. Might give him a belly ache if he ate too many, but then dogs eat plenty of strange stuff without a second thought. Call your vet if you're still worried.

Thats awesome. I have a black Krim that was just under 2 pounds (ugly as can be though) which I thought was amazing, but good god that thing is massive! Do you do anything purposely to these plants(Miracle grow daily?) to grow such massive tomatoes or is it just nature as it was with my 2 pounder? I actually cut all the catface out of it tonight and ate it. It was soooooooooooooooooo juicy and good. Even the huge ugly tomatoes are delicious. I was suprised it was tasty. I expected the worst.

Oh my gosh, johnmari! I didn't realize that you meant this exact one. My friend and the hubby at the house put in in the trailer for me, as I could never have done it. It's darn heavy, and SO beautifully made. The furniture movers who brought it in for me took my other one out quite easily, as they know their stuff, but this one was even heavy for them. I've enjoyed reading on the H&M website how all this is made, and those nail heads went in one by one...It's an investment piece for me, and am so happy how at home it looks in my LR. I can't sit on it without at least 2 dogs being on it with me, and I am amazed that they haven't scratched it. Leather is great! Tracey, I did my kitchen in a similar color to what you saw in the LR. It's Ben Moore Crimson, #1299, and I LOVE it. It's really NOT 'crimson' as I think of it, but a terra cotta color. You may want to check that out also, but the Baked Terra Cotta sounds more like what you are looking for. Great plan to do it while hubby is away!

Very meaty tomato but not quiet as good tasting as the Brandywines or Big Beefs. But this is just our first one. I'll reserve judgment till the crop is in.

Sylvia: Had our first mess of pole beans that you suggested we try in our second "tomato" house. Absolutely delicious. Found out we need to reduce our cooking time from what we use for store bought.

Papa Jim, I am also growing the oxheart Kosovo this season and I am very happy with the flavor and production. I like a strain of Brandywine from Monticello but sometimes is a good producer and sometimes is not, I planted this season yellow Brandywine and have not seen any ripe yet and only have few fruit in the vine. Big Beef is always a reliable producer and when it ripens on the vine has a good flavor.
When I visited Tom's garden the Beefmaster where producing really well compared to the others, he was also growing Indigo Rose and he said he liked the flavor, the vines are strong and produce well.

I just love the taste of fresh beans and my dogs too, we are eating them daily, like you said they only take minutes to prepare and they are delicious!

We are working on the bananas this week, taking the bunches down and preserving for later, they really have a knockout flavor, nothing like the store bought, the only but is that they are a lot of work.
