Boiled Shrimp and Friends on Friday

I finally got to see a bloom on Hanson's BOILED SHRIMP today. It only had a few buds in its first year, and most of them bloomed while I was away. I like the tropical color, but the petals aren't pleating yet.

I absolutely love your picture of Wonder of Wonders "with companions". It is so pretty. I also like Sweet Child of Mine with the daisys. Tiffany Jewels is probably my favorite bloom, but your Boiled Shrimp is a beautiful color.

Wizard's Wish is my choice, along with the wonderful picture of Wonder of Wonders (a clump that looks as though it is ready to be divided).

The liquid only needs to be hot, not boiling, to cook the shrimp. Ask my wife about the time I called from the train and asked her to thaw some shrimp under running water. Yup, they were cooked by the time I got home, LOL! Second thought, don't ask her. She gets mad. I lean slightly to the cook ahead side, in particular if you want to be 100% stress free about doneness and timing. Just dump in no more than a minute or two before serving. But intuitively the suggestion for undercooking makes no sense to me. To get the center of the shrimp perfectly cooked the heat must travel through the outside. Why subject to the outside to that amount of heat twice? In that case I'm thinking you'd be better off using cookebook/Jo's method. Fully cooked ahead, all you need to do is ascertain it doesn't feel cold in the middle.

Dredge shrimp in flour, coating all sides. 2. Heat oil in large sautÃ© pan over high heat. When oil is very hot but not smoking, add shrimp and sautÃ© for 2 to 3 minutes or until shrimp have just begun to brown. (Do not crowd pan: sautÃ© shrimp in batches if necessary.) Remove shrimp from pan and drain off all excess oil. 3. Stir in wine, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic. When well combined, whisk in 4 tablespoons butter and salt and pepper and bring to boil. My best friend's mother made the best shrimp creole I have ever eaten. When I got married, my husband was a shrimper, and I tried for years to duplicate her recipe. By the time I thought to ask her, she was in a nursing home, and my friend had no idea what her recipe was. She didn't know anything about any of her mother's cookbooks or recipe file, which surprises me because I practically lived at her house growing up, and she had the most complete pantry I have ever seen at anyone's house. Plus, she was always saving recipes from magazines and newspapers. I finally hit on it....bacon grease. I also make the roux out of bacon grease. I make mine similar to yours, but I don't care for tomato pieces in mine, so I use sauce. I have done the making broth out of shrimp shells, but I abandoned that long ago in favor of using chicken broth. It has a lot more flavor and doesn't compete with the flavor of the creole. You are smart to add the shrimp at the last minute. They just need to cook such a short time and every time I have eaten shrimp cooked in a crock pot, they have been over cooked to the extent of being mushy.

You can get cold water lobsters any time of year but they are most plentiful (and I think cheapest) in the summer months. Scallops are in season through the winter months-- December until March/April if I remember correctly. We always have scallops for Christmas because they are so fresh and so good then! I would strongly recommend getting fresh/live lobster in order to make your lobster rolls. You can generally get frozen lobster tail anywhere but it's just not going to taste as good as you are remembering! I frequently buy precooked crab meat but I just wouldn't do it with lobster. If I opt to go with presteamed crab and shrimp, it will have been done that day-- the crabs will be fresh. We have plenty of local businesses that will gladly do both. What they won't do is clean the steamed crabs as my dad and grandfather used to do for us when we were growing up. They'd get bushels of crabs, steam then and clean them all out before serving them on the picnic tables. I was an adult before I knew that you have to clean your own crabs!

I love those last two bed shots that show the gardens. They look so pretty. Your PURIFY MY HEART looks so good :-) I like your BOILED SHRIMP just the way it is right now. Pretty colors on a pretty bloom.

Mantis - You are right! Wonder of Wonders needs to be divided. It always provides me with pretty clump shots late in the season. I'm surprised it wasn't registered as a late. It's been one of my "late" bloomers for six years.

Rita - Purify My Heart is just a joy now that it has more fans. As for Boiled Shrimp, apparently those Hanson throat pinchers need some maturity to have the pleated petals. I hope this one will do as well as Stealth Bomber in the future.

Okay, seriously. I must be hungry, because I went for the "boiled shrimp" post right away and was very sorry a plate didn't pop out of my monitor. LOL

Fly so Free was my favorite here, but that last shot of Wonder of Wonders is fantastic! What a great group of flowers. ;)

I love the color on Boiled Shrimp, and just imagine what it will look like once it starts its special "thing." Purify My Heart is, again, my pick of the group. Terrific photos.

Wonderful color on Boiled Shrimp, I had to look it up to see how it should look. A great picture of Sweet Child of mine with the daisies, and that is a wonderful clump of Wonder of wonders

You have some very pretty ones.I like the color on BOILED SHRIMP but unlike crackingtheconcrete ,I not wanting them to pop out of my monitor.I dont like Boiled Shrinp, but I love them fried. my favorite is WIZARD'S WISH. That is a real beauty.

I think Boiled Shrimp is beautiful. maybe it will begin pleating soom. Also, Wonder Of Wonders with all the other lovelies is looking really good!! Ellie

Jean - Wizard's Wish is such a nice bicolor. And although it's registered ML, it's always one of my latest to start blooming. The only one in that "late" bed that starts later is Royal Jester.

Ellie - That was my last bloom on Boiled Shrimp, so I think it will be next season before the pleating starts.

Linda - The seedling formerly known as Poop Eye was showing a lot more gold tones yesterday. I'm thinking about naming it Caramel Mocha Latte or Copper Thief. The extreme heat changed it's color somewhat. Obviously, there's a gold base under that copper and brown.

ok i'm with crackingconcrete :) I looked in there to see boiled shrimp well it is 12:30 and i haven't eaten yet LOL then i seen poop eye well that ruined my appetite real quick! too funny i really thought i was going to see food photos! holly

Shooter has a real cute name as well as a good looking daylily with "Snake in the grass Boo". My favorite is the garden shot with the Phlox, Rudbeckia and Hibiscus etc. and Wonder of Wonders. Great color color and plant combination. Off to look up Wonder of Wonders.....Maryl
