A picture of my fragrant, tea olive olive tree..

My tree has done very well this summer..It has grown about a few inches taller this year and is now starting to flower like crazy in the weather..

Cold nights and cool days.....I love this tree..:-)

You have a very gorgeous Osmanthus, Mike!

I had to give all of mine away since I couldn't keep them happy indoor. But, yours is just wow!! :)

Your sweet olive is gorgeous!
Do you keep it outside in a greenhouse?
You bring it inside for the winter?
It has grown so big, if it is the one you had last year.
Did you ever get your red one?
I can smell it from here. Have any of your neighbors asked what that good smell was yet?

Plantings of multiple above head height tea olives at University of Washington damaged (all previous year's shoots burnt and defoliated, leaving them poking oddly above the shell of older leaves like quills) last winter because it got down to maybe 15 degrees F. there. Here on Camano Island it was probably 10 degrees colder; small fatsia were killed to the ground beneath low-branching conifers, small windmill palms killed completely; during coldest winters (such as 1990) loquats burn back badly even in Seattle. An older planting of tea olive at the Seattle arboretum has persisted for years, without any dramatic damage that I have had occasion to observe myself. Must be a more hardy introduction than usual, they are even growing on a slick clay bank where hardiness would be expected to be less than on an open-textured soil. Lowland western WA is USDA 8.

Is there any way that you could take a picture or two and let us see these plants? Mine is planted in unamended red clay soil and has grown about 6 feet in three (maybe four) years. It was given to us as a small but healthy three gallon plant. We don't have an irrigation system, so all new plantings are hand watered for a period of time. We fertilize sparingly and infrequently. It has always bloomed prolifically off and on during the years. Please don't add phosphorus to your soil without having a soil test that determines a severe deficiency. In most cases, adding phosphorus to the soil is not just unnecessary, but harmful...to the plant, the soil ecosystem, and even the environment. It's a myth that won't die. One thing you can do to improve the root/soil system for your Osmanthus fragrans is to maintain a 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch in a large area around the trunk BUT NEVER PILED UP ON THE TRUNK. If you improve the soil environment, the roots respond by increased growth and development. Once that happens....the top growth will respond the way you want it to. Avoid excess Nitrogen, too. I mentioned that we didn't not amend the soil when we planted. That's an important factor, even in clay soil. Also, plants should probably be placed a bit higher than the natural soil grade. You said you were sure that you've done something wrong. How about telling us just what you've been doing (and not doing) and we can be in a better position to help you. You can see from my own experience that you sure don't have to do much, even in red clay soil! If I can, you can.

You could always plant them in large pretty pots, not sure if they do all that well up here myself, but I moved here from Jacksonville Fl. and I have been overwintering a lot of plants indoors since being up here.Most of my favorites just don't perform this far north so I adapted and now have quite a lot of plants in containers.

Mike, congrats! I just got one of these from Almost Eden Plants and I love the fragrance! Then again, who doesn't!? Makes me think of what my plant's going to look like in a few years :).

Yes, it is the same one as last year...It grew big didn't it?!..I love this tree..I also have 3 others doing just as nice..I bought them in 2 inch pots, and now they are so much bigger since the spring..I will post those pics soon..I hope you see them..
Because of all the gardenia information you have dispensed here, mine are also doing fanatastic!
I never got that red olive....They are so expensive and I was told they do not bloom as much..
I never put that any in the pop up..This particular one has been going in my garage at night when temps drop to the 30's..Then it has stayed outdoors everyday since..It seems to thrive in the cold....I also place it against the pop up so that it faces the sun and it warms that area up very nicely..Cold at night, warm by day and fresh rain...Loves it..;-)
