Well, that's the thing about cool weather (and, really, warm weather) crops in the Great Lakes region. You just never know what kind of weather the seasons will bring. I would hate to make a hard and fast rule about "don't plant cool weather crops after such and such a date" because our weather is so variable, and depends so much on where the jet streams and other weather patterns set up. There are years that it is so cool all summer it's a real struggle to get warm season crops to perform, but cool season crops thrive even in July and August. And then, other years, its turns hot early and cool season crops are basically finished by early/mid June. You just really don't know here. I say hedge your bets, plant away, and be prepared to rotate crops and use alternates if the weather doesn't cooperate.

Hi Beverly, To answer your Q?, I did go to Darby Creek Nursery,me and my friends went there after the swap. But they didn't have a good sale like they did last fall.We left there almost empty handed.But we had stopped at Shroders off of 71 on our way to the swap and before we got to the swap. They have some really good sales on their plants.That's where we bought most of our plants that day. On our way home we stopped at Seely's. I ended up buying 4 Hostas and Jacquie and her sister Bobbi bought 4 or 5. And we were loaded for bear.LOL I was in so much pain I couldn't hardly stand it. But It was fun.I couldn't unload my car and lucky for me I have some very able friends who don't mind helping or doing for me.Oh!! If I only Had My Legs Back!!! What's this Beverly about you having a Hosta Sale on the 30th? FWIW, I think we've plenty of warm weather left - @ least until December. As long as it's getting enough sun, I think it'll be OK. I notice Wally's in TX - not the same as here - seed starting dates for Central & S FL are basically Mar.-Sep (see table 3 in link below).... I have a couple of varieties of okra just starting to produce right now - & they're doing MUCH better than the crop I tried planting earlier in the year. Hi everyone. Peppers: Leave them alone. I used to hve trouble with them too and then last year I planted a zillion b/c I always have so much trouble with bell peppers. Well, I did not amend the soil this year and I really did not water as often. I think the biggie is that before I treated them like my tomatoes. I watered the same and fed the same. Last year it dawned on me that these are a southwest native. In other words, they LIKE a lot of heat and can be on the dry side. Let them be. Esp. if you are getting lots of lush foliage but not fruit. This means you are feeding too much or the bed is too rich. This was m exp. last year and when I planted zillions, I did not need that many. I still have baggies in the freezer of them. Carrots. I have trouble with them too. I can gro beats and radishes like a magazine picture. But for some reason my carrots don't tend to do much of anything. Last year I actually had long skinny root but they did not grow like supposed to. But that was better than previous years when they sprouted nd then went kaput.
