Moving a Star Magnolia

We have a Star Magnolia which has been in the ground about 6 years and is about 8-9 ft tall and quite wide. Of course, we now realise we planted a group of different trees way too close together - the classic beginner's mistake, I suppose. The magnolia now casts too much shade and is crowding out other things. We would like to move it and are resigned to digging the huge rootball and preparing the new area, question is when is the best time? Star magnolias flower so early (February), we are wondering if the sap starts rising in late fall, anyone have experience? Thank you.
