Do you cover your containers over the winter?
Comments (7)If you stored it in an unheated garage, yes. I've had young Heuchera plants, and other perennials, in 4" plastic pots survive the winter stored inside our garage. I use plastic baby pools to group all my stored plants... it makes adding moisture easier, and it keeps them off the concrete floor. I keep the garage closed all winter, opening the door as little as possible. In early spring, as the weather gets nicer, I open the garage door for periods of time during the day. I close it again before nightfall. The plants slowly come out of dormancy, and once frost isn't an issue any longer, I move the plants back outdoors. Or... you could plant the Heuchera in the garden before winter and protect it with a layer of mulch....See MoreSaran method - Finally got them to winter over! How did you do?
Comments (7)I had a slight debacle, if there can be such a thing, after bringing my wrapped tubers into the basement to warm up/eye up. I had lost about 20 total in the winter, but all of a sudden they started molding like crazy- rot soon followed or was already happening internally and I had to throw out about 150, maybe more. That's about 15%, so still not bad. Could have been better though! It was quite disheartening to lose some varieties entirely, but I have enough to keep me entertained. My lesson learned: unwrap if you store in saran and bring them into a warm environment! The very few I stored in vermiculite in a bin were a bit dry, a couple died. I'm still a Saran fan for space saving. Jroot, you should see me whipping out masterful paper pot liners thanks to your photo lesson last year! Still not an artist, but I learned enough to make them fairly neat LOL! I am wondering where Bernie is hiding? I've been admonished for posting such an inquiry in a thread title, so I'm sneaking it in here :P Anybody heard word on him?...See MoreHow Do YOU Choose A Picture - Your Art - For Over Your Fireplace
Comments (28)My husband wanted to put up this ugly reproduction of a horse race painting that he found at a garage sale, I told him "give me a week, I'll find something better online!" I wanted a modern look, some realisitc photography, but I didn't want black and white because we have so many b&w prints in the house already. I finally bought a color print of a park scene (some park in NYC, I'm not sure which) at a web site called Brooklyn Prints. Every mantle is different, of course; I had just enough space to put up a 16x20 print in a wood frame. Our fireplace is for decoration only, so we didn't have to worry about heat damage to the frame or the print, but it is something to think about too. Here is a link that might be useful: Brooklyn Prints...See MoreOver wintering rooted cuttings...tell me how you do it!
Comments (14)Roseguy, question, I have a piece of that plastic clear roofing, that I can prop against the back of the house over my young rooted plants...do you think that will help protect them? Is it necessary? You can see in the picture that I kinda rigged it up to help block super strong rain (when I first started cuttings) I drilled 4 holes in it and used bungie cords to attach it to a piece of fence panel...lol...don't laugh at me! I can take it off the fence panel and use it propped against the house and put my more delicate rooted babies under it. I also thought maybe I would get a dozen bales of straw and butt my roses against the house, then put the bales against the pots. When things warm up, I can tear the bales apart and use as mulch right where they are! Am I over thinking this?? Thoughts? The panels are cheap at HD. Different colors, some are only about 15.00...See Moresavy4
