anyone know anything about lawn care?

I have posted in the lawn forum as well, but usually when I post over there, most of the replies are people in the north who don't understand that our timing of seeding, etc. is much different than theirs. So here's my dilemma if anyone can help.

We have a fescue lawn, seeded last fall. We'll need to overseed this fall as well (late Sept, early Oct). I have a problem with poa taking over. Is there anything that will kill poa without killing the fescue? AND...can I put down a pre-emergent now to help prevent more from seeding and still be okay to seed fescue in the fall?

The only thing I know that kills po-anna is Image. And it is expensive and iffy. It may also damage your fescue. I have bermuda and Image doesn't hurt it, but I used a lot last year to get rid of po-anna and it was iffy at best.

A pre-emergent such as Halts used in the fall is supposed to prevent po-anna, but I found that to be iffy too.

This year we hired chem lawn. Even paying them to come is cheaper than buying the stuff ourselves and we have much better results. Whatever they sprayed on our lawn killed the oxalis we were inundated with and took care of most of the poanna.

Since you have fescue, I'm assuming you have a lot of shade. Unfortunately poanna survives better in shade, I don't have any in the sunny parts of my lawn, but it thrives in the shady spots.

Yes, you can definitely put pre-emergent down now and it will not hurt the fall fescue seeding. However, do consider that you have to put pre-emergent down BEFORE weed seeds like POA germinate. Unfortunately I found this statement on a Perdue.edu website about golf course maintenance dated in September:

Poa annua germination peaks in September and October, but will continue to germinate throughout a warm winter and well into spring. Open turf from late aerification will encourage Poa annua germination. Additionally, bringing soil cores to the surface will also bring viable Poa seeds to the surface further encouraging germination. The best method to help limit Poa encroachment at this time of the year is with preemergence herbicides. A number of products are labeled for Poa annua control and applications around Labor Day are most effective. However, if no preemergence herbicide was applied yet and aerification is still scheduled for this year, itÂs not too late to apply. A benefit of applying preemergence now is that it will continue to limit Poa germination throughout the winter and spring and will prevent summer annuals like crabgrass from germinating early next summer.

So it sounds like POA is germinating about the same time you want your fescue to germinate. Putting down pre-emergent now may not help you.

I had a couple in the 80's and 90's when I had far less area to mow than I do these days. I never had any issues with the models I had back then and unless they hit a serious brain fart I can't imagine they will have regressed with their new designs. Mine had spacers to adjust cut height. I don't see the hover models as any more of a danger to toes than a wheeled model. Both will equally amputate if you give them the chance. I found the easiest way to cut slopes was to do it from the top down, start at the top and allow gravity to take the mower down then pull it back up, don't try pushing uphill. I used a mowing action similarly to how one would use a vacuum cleaner, but then I did have considerably less to cut back then. As long as you go over everything you end up with a nice level lawn As for controlability choose a model that's a suitable size for your mother to handle. From my recollections of the models I had Pros. No wheel groves and you can cut in any direction, so corners and recesses are easier to manage, no having to go backwards then forwards to cut the strip next to the bit you just cut. Very handy if you have lots of obstacles in your garden, much easier to mow around things. They were electric so no engine maintenance, starting problems, fuel cans, oil or air filters to worry about. Just keeping the housing clean after cuts and blade service. Not suggesting that the motors last forever. Cons. It was electric and you had to keep moving the extension cords out of the way. Not being restrained by wheels the free flowing movement means you have to be way more aware of where the cord is. As far as cuts go they did just as good a job as any wheeled rotary mower. There are no wheels, so you have to carry it back to wherever you store it, bear this in mind when you choose a model size for your mother. I cannot comment on the reliability of today's models or the suitability of a rotary mower for the kind of grass you have, all I can do is pass on a consumer review.

I had a whole page dedicated to Troy on my website. He also owes me money....and 2 or 3 others. I used to speak with him by email a few times a week unless he was out collecting plants. All of a sudden, I didn't hear from him. It's been over 4 months. He has not returned any of my emails. I got emails from people that paid for plants and ordered from Troy because of my his info on my site. I am the one that posted the Troy stuff on Aroid-l. It's one thing to be a great guy like Troy used to be.....very honest & funny. Until he makes good on all of his deals, I will only speak the truth and state the facts as I know them....which isn't looking too good right now. I remember when we were younger in Texas. We watched a big ole turtle walkin down the road towards Zeboes park. We walked along side it till it got to the main road then my twin sister and I each grabbed a side of the turtle's shell and picked it up. It just relaxed and enjoyed the ride. We heard a hissing when we first went to pick it up but after that it didn't make any noises at all. It was relaxed and non agressive at all. I suppose that is when I first fell in love with turtles. I have encountered a few agressive turtles but not many. I am very cautious of COOTERS tho. I am curious if that is a nickname for a certain type of turtle that is indigenous to South Carolina or if it is a real type of turtle? I guess I will just google it. I am not at all fond of water birds. Our experiences with water fowl has been more problematic than anything else. I have had ducks and geese chase and attack our daughters when they were toddlers. They would chase my daughters and take their bottles and any food they may have had in their hands or mouths. They have attacked my chihuahuas and my cats. I have seen small birds dive bomb my cats. Tho I must admit, it is quite comical to watch. Those little birds do damage to my four legged friends. I can't stand the bird droppings all over everything. Turtles are good. I could not imagine eating anything soooooooooo cute.

what I know so far is the tools are very good quality and have a sound warranty - lifetime on many. most are available in blue as well as pink My drive in looking at Tomboy Tools - and maybe there is a better avenue - is to help women become more confident to tackle DIY projects on their own. I have always been willing to take on almost anything from tearing apart the lawn mower when I was a teenager to now building furniture and fixing almost any small household problem...except electric... I too was the first girl in my high school to take shop class instead of home ec....what a battle that was! Now (all grown up) I love to cook and have started to sewing to my mothers pleasant surprise. I have more tools than most men I know - all high quality like Dewalt and Makita...so I know I will have high standards for performance. I'm just not sure this is the way to go, but I do like their objectives. I also think there a plenty of ladies that are single or just want a little confidence to do things themselves. The main drawback for me is the Multi level marketing. Although I do have a couple friends that are very successful with Tupperware and Pampered Chef...I do not have intentions of making this a full time career. aahhh...what to do?

I can't remember what I wrote in the lawncare forum but I have a section of my yard that is Kentucky Bluegrass and I used image (which is for warm season grasses like bermuda) to carefully spot treat and I was able to get good results without noticable damage to the bluegrass. You might try that to spot treat in a pump spray on a day that isn't windy.
