hey all ginger friends!

This might be a stupid question but i do not know i remember it from somewhere:

Can I grow ginger from a root I bought at my grocery store?

What steps should I take to do this. Any ideas?

I found the topic here on garden web. I would see a photo of what it would look like. Something came up in my garden, maybe because I composted a ginger root, years ago. It took years to bloom.

I need a few low growing, winter dormant gingers such as globbas or curcumas. Topping my wish list is curcuma khymer orange. To trade I have globba schomburgkii, curcuma figi, kaemperfia gilbertii, kaempeferia rotunda raven, kaempferia silver spot, hedychium angustifolia peach, hedychium kewense, hedychium daniel weeks, heliconia rostrata, heliconia jacquinii, heliconia red yellow gyro, costus spicata, costus purple stem, alpinia nutans, alpinia purpurata pink, alpinia purpurata red, lots of bananas, bromeliads, aroids, cannas etc. If you have an uncommon low growing ginger let me know what your looking for, possibly we can work something out as I have been collecting for years now.

Save your pic to a specific location, you may have to shrink size. When you write comment, click photo button and search file location, click on pic to add to your comment and submit. I took the root from the "spicebox" ginger out and let dry a couple days then put some moist peat under and it re-sprouted, but see how tiny the original cluster is next to quarter. No wonder they said it can grow indoors on windowsill. I hope this time it grows bigger, it only got 6in tall before.

The store bought ginger was so stubborn to grow that it shoot out a nice healthy green tip just a couple of weeks back. So finally, instead of using it in cooking, I put it the ground.. It's still growing very well. So my guess is, you are still ok.. Even if, it just shoots and does not grow big, I would say, keep it in for the next season... Good luck.

You can grow from grocery store roots but not ideal....many times these are treated with a growth inhibitor that prevents sprouting. And the sprouting is exactly what needs to happen if you want to grow it as a plant in order to harvest fresh ginger :-) (Turmeric is just a dfferent type of ginger). When selecting for grocery store roots, you want to look for plump roots with taut skin...no shriveling or softness. And hopefully with several eyes or growth points - even better if they are already green or sprouting. Soak overnight to fully hydrate and to remove as much of whatever hormones or pesticides the roots may have been treated with. There are many sources online that will indicate how to plant and care for these but essentially you want to care for them just as you would any other tropical houseplant - out of drafts, with reasonable warmth and bright but indirect light. Yeah, this is one you don't grow for the flowers. Or the foliage, just the roots. Mine is just now starting to come up.

Help!! I have a ginger plant that I got for little bit of money. And it was huge. But I can't care for it right. It seems to be dying. How can I save it? I had it in the house in front of a window that gets some sun. And I water it. Now I have it on the front porch but it must not like that either. What is the secret to growing ginger? Thank You

Patty, any idea what kind it is? Some need more sun than others, some like more water. If the bulb/root is still firm and healthy looking you can cut off the dead foliage and it will probably put up new shoots.
