Favorite Spring Native Wildflowers- What are Yours?

Hi all,

I am looking for more native wildflowers for my garden. Do you have favorites? I love the ephemerals: trilliums, Erythroniums, and Bloodroot. What else do you love?

I love Celandine Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum)-- nice foliage, and yellow flowers that really pop in a woodland setting. I also love Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica)-- outstanding blue flowers on this ephemeral. Another favorite is Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica) -- bright red flowers are a real standout.

I really need to get some of those Erythroniums. so pretty!

Rue Anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides) is one of my favorites and I find it can be especially long lasting and very adaptable.

Hepatica is a favorite because it is the first thing to bloom for me. It does best for me when planted near the base of a large tree.

Of course I like the things that have already been mentioned ... but I wanted to offer up some other suggestions.

Bluebells are in bloom, the front beds have dicentra - fringed bleeding heart and dutchman's breeches, trout lilies, wild columbine, celandine poppies all up and looking good but nowhere near blooming. The serviceberries are in bud, scarlet elder and several kinds of viburnums and dogwoods leafing out. The baby sized native azaleas have the beginnings of buds showing. We had a mild winter and everything came through fine but we're in trouble if we don't get some rain soon. I tried tilling up a new bed for a butterfly meadow and the tiller just bounced on the surface as though it were on concrete. Yesterday I felt like I had descended into that special circle of Hell reserved for sedentary middle-aged office workers who try to work like day-laborers on the weekend.

Easy Living Wildflowers in Mo. Real easy to deal with. I send email to John with what I want and now he ships them before he gets my check. I bought a packet of Little Bluestem seeds and got about 10,000 instead of 50. I order from them every year. This year I even broke down and bought plants. They were packed incredibly well. Hmmmm, this might just be worth skipping the Talahi Sale. If Chattanooga was a little closer, I bet it would put the Talahi sale out of business. When I was down at RR a while back, they sure had a lot of intersting stuff in their greenhouse area.

Aputernut what are the origins of your kings? They are magnificent!! DH and I took a trip to Bronner's this fall. #1 on my bucket list was a visit!! I am sooo embarrassed and feel so STUPID. I was not interested in the video of the history as I knew it and saw much on Youtube, so avoided the "Program room". I did peak in at one point and it was dark as a show was going on...The next day, an hour outside of Frankenmuth I began reading their literature. To my GREAT frustration I discovered in that dark room are cases of 150+ nativities from 50+ different countries!! I have been begging and the Bronner's Facebook page has begun posting pictures of some of them. Unfortunately they do not post as many Creche sets as they do ornaments. But they are not for sale--they are a private collection so I get it. ANYWAY I added a camel and cow to my outdoor set..and I am scouring ebay for a few more shepherds..there are some older characters out there I would love to get my hands on!! We also went to one large spot light. DH is very into cutting our wattage use DOWN. I have a star hanging on the back of the light pole, and we have enough snow to cover the blue extension cord so it is all very nice IMHO

May Apple - Podophyllum peltatum
Atanasco lily - Zephyranthes atamasca
Moss phlox - Phlox subulata
Lady-slipper Orchids

And the Iris.....
Iris cristata - Dwarf crested
verna - Dwarf violet
versicolor - Harlequin blue flag
hexagona - Dixie (wish mine would bloom, just once!)
pseudacorus - Pale yellow (Introduced, but I still like it!)
