I was born and raised in Melbourne -- a great place to live, and a great place to grow fruit. As Larry says, most people on this forum are in the US, as I now am. I believe a very well regarded nursery in Australia is Daley's. You can find them on line. I know that here in the US serious fruit tree growers order their trees on line from nurseries that specialize in fruit trees, rather than from local nurseries whose employees tend not to be very knowledgeable about growing fruit trees. And if you want to grow fruit trees, get yourself a copy of the great book by a fellow Melbournian, Louis Glowinski, "The Complete Book of Fruit Growing in Australia." He used to grow an enormous number of kinds of fruit trees on his quarter acre block in Caulfield -- maybe he still does.

Paul: Raintree has some of these. I've got Krymsk 1. Have plum, peach, and apricot on it. Doesn't seem very compatible with peach in particular, huge overgrowth of scion on the root. Not so good with apricot either. Good looking union with plum and pluot. The fruit on K1 is much smaller than on Citation. Also have cherry on Giesla 5, 6, and 12. G5 doesn't look good here. Seems very drought sensitive and runts out under my conditions. I'd much rather have G6 or G12. The Fruitnut

this will ease everyone's pain. living in NY also means having a garden the size of a postage stamp. (in case its not completely obvious, the wooden porch on the right of the picture is my neighbour's garden). these pics were taken in early spring. the plants are all leafed out now and are several times larger- you cant see more than a few inches in front of you. getting from one end of the garden to the other requires a samurai sword.

Since most retail nurseries are resellers and not growers, they are relying on outside sources for most of their inventory. And to be perfectly honest, there are not all that many organic growers, as product is much harder and more expensive to manage organically. Cascade Cuts out of Bellingham is the only organic grower of veggie starts for the retail market I am aware of locally, There used to be another vendor when I was buying for a nursery, but they have since gone out of business. And since most retail nurseries purchase from an assortment of vendors, they may not differentiate between organically grown plants and those that are not, as stock will fluctuate daily in season. I guess it depends on how dogmatic one is about "organics". To me, it is far more important how I grow the plant to maturity and productivity than it is on how the grower produced it. If I adhere to organic gardening principals in my garden, then I am quite happy to consider that plant and the produce it generates as being 'organic', even if it didn't necessarily start out that way. But if you are rigid in your definition, then growing from organic seeds (not starts) is the way to go. I am not aware of any growers that produce organically grown fruits for the retail nursery market. They are even harder to maintain via organic methods only. Sometimes you will encounter organic growers at farmer's markets and plant sales but they all tend to have limited inventory.
