Kerby's Nursery in Seffner

I hadn't been to Kerby's in a few years and noticed on their website that they had remodeled the nursery. We took a ride there today and I was shocked. It was one of the nicest, if not the nicest, nursery I have ever been to. Even my DH loved it! The selection was great and the prices were very good. The staff is knowledgeable and they are all around.

I bought so much that I don't have to go to the Green Thumb Festival next weekend. This is really worth going to. I took exit 260 (Mango) off of I 75, which brought me onto MLK and made a right on Parsons and there it was.

I agree, stopped there twice when passing by and gotten nice plants not seen elsewhere, prices weren't bad either.

I've put it in our "navigator" along with other favorite stuff. Guess the car needs a bumper sticker "Caution-stops at plant sales". lol

It's been one of my favorite nurseries for years. Sadly, I haven't been there for a while.

I don't know when you're coming, but the USF plant sale is April 11-12 and they always have the palm and cycad society there, as well as lots of palm vendors. I've heard that Kerby's nursery in Seffner (just east of tampa) has a wide variety of plants and I believe they carry palms. I'm sure someone else could provide you with more info on places in the st. pete area.

I'm in Pasco, so I hope I can help. Country Club Nursery in Largo is good. They have a website of the same name. Also, defintely, the St. Pete Green Thumb Festival April 25th & 26th. USF is good, but I think the St. Pete is better and it has free admission and free parking. Get there by 9am and you get a free butterfly plant. Kerby's is good, but you are probably closer to Country Club. Over at the Oldsmar Flea Market, there's a good garden center. They have a nice selection and good prices and are right there to ask questions. If you enter from Tampa Rd., they are at the far right end. I've been to Crowley's and the Florida Native nursery and they are both good, but nothing I couldn't get anywhere else. Also Crowley's should be at both USF & St. Pete. Julie

Hi. I happened to be at Jene's (I heard her name pronounced Juh-nay) on Friday and LOVED it. I planned to post photos (will when I get a chance to download). I bought 3 blueberry plants that were in wonderful shape with ripe berries on them. I am not local so wasn't looking for big fruit trees but I have to say I thought they looked pretty good to me. Weird that other people didn't like it there. I was in heaven and wished I had more room in the van to buy more plants. I bought other small stuff like mimosa, dune sunflower. I wanted their dutchman's pipe just because it had gold-rim butterfly eggs on it but didn't buy it and am still wishing I had. I thought the staff was friendly, I was asked by 2 different people if I needed help and they gave it when asked. I went there especially because I had heard about it on this forum and was staying at a park nearby (Fort DeSoto-FABULOUS!) I had also planned to stop at Kerby's later but after Jene's and the USF rose sale I had no more room or spare $. Maybe you hit it on a bad hour or day. I really enjoyed my stop there. They really have a lot of different plants in a smallish city location. My experience was a good one. I'm sorry yours was less than good. Denise

I can relate to the desperation you felt in trying to save your babies. Two weeks ago, I was in the same position. Went out with DH and made the rounds until I found a nursery with nice large plants. I bought 6 3-gallon ones to get my baby cats through the crisis. Well, I should have checked the plants closer....the were covered in eggs. I made it through the first crisis but created another even larger one. At this point I have a wonderful collection of "stick plants" and plan on letting them re-leaf naturally and let nature take its course. I went through this back in February and swore I wouldn't make myself crazy again.....but this time I really mean it!!!

Julie, what did you get?

I noticed that they have a large selection of rare fruits. I got my dragon fruit there last fall.

They have a large fruit selection. This weekend is their butterfly plant festival.

I got a candy corn plant (cuphea melvilla)
2 silver cushion plants (calocephalus brownii)
2 summer snapdragon ( penstemon Phoenix Red & Violet)
1 arabian jasmine
and a daylily.

The summer snapdragons are beautiful. I hope they do well. I'm going to plant the silver cushions in the front of the house facing west, because I'm hoping they can handle the afternoon sun. The daylily and the candy corn plant I got because I liked them, but the jasmine because I walked by them and the smell was wonderful.

I like the way they have the boardwalk all around so you can pull your cart with you (carts are at the entrance) and there are benches for the cart pullers (aka DH)! Nice ceramic planters, too. I made it out of there without a rose, but I did sneak a look and they had a nice selection. It only took us 45 mins to get there with the new I 75 exit on SR 56. Last time it took over an hour.
