If You Don't Want to Blog but You Want a Page for your Garden

There's a feature on Google that maybe has been there a while, but I just found it yesterday.

It's a page where you make a Page.

It's called Sites. If you go to

and click on "more" on the bar at the top, you'll bring down a menu with 'Sites' at the bottom.

Not only is it fairly easy, making a page and putting in your images, there is a Help feature that actually helps.

The only feature that I had trouble with was putting a picture on the Heading. (Not necessary to do unless you want one.)

The pic must be resized down to 52 pixels high

and no more than about 500 wide. Bummer banner.

Nell, I loved the Azalea Walk. You must have the touch with cuttings. I do not. I am trying some kerria cuttings over winter; we'll see how those do.

This a a great feature. I need to check it out.

I am hoping you will be adding more pictures soon.

Nell, Your Azalea walk has such a natural feel to it, it really is beautiful and the gardenias, oh my the perfume from them must be wonderful.

I think the critical thing to understand is that fertilizer is not needed for healthy growth in soil that is well conditioned through years of organic inputs. The key points to focus on is that most soils require years of organic inputs and we aren't talking about a light dusting with compost either. We are talking about modifying the soil so around 30+ percent is organic matter. We also aren't talking about growing award winning giant pumpkins in that soil, we are talking about plants that grow healthy and reasonably. Most trees, shrubs and perennials grow well in soils with low to moderate fertility and compost alone is more than capable of doing the job. Annuals grown for effect whether it be an ornamental flower or high yielding veggy will almost always benefit from understanding the plant's growth cycle and environmental requirements for not just good, healthy growth, but optimal yields and then meeting them. Some perennial plants grown for fruit also qualify. If one wants a nice looking yard full of healthy plants that do well, compost alone is sufficient. If one wants a 5lb tomato or a 1000# + pumpkin then one best start researching the plant's nutrient requirements and fertilizers that will optimally meet them.

I think they're pretty but I could see that the colors might be too subtle. What I noticed is that not only are they "bearded" iris, they are "goatee" irises! If they don't have a name I'd call them "Van Dyke"! I have never seen ones with that little swooping pointy projection below the fuzzy beards.

THANKS for sharing the seedling pics....my FAVORITE PICS to look at! My seedling bed seems to be in PEAK BLOOM right now with the established gardens just taking off.....LOL I am discovering what you think versus what you get plays no part in the end result.....LOL I sure have some beautiful seedlings blooming tho so NO COMPLAINTS here! Had to chuckle about your Slimy_Okra moniker. We're not in prime okra country but I have a good spot for it. Nine times out of ten I can sell every pod I can find. Among my customers are a number of ex-southerners and then others who just like okra. Don't know how much I could actually sell as rarely have it on table long. Anyone who shops later probably doesn't even know its been available. Once in a while one of regular purchasers doesn't show up a particular week. So I put out the box(es) saved for him later in the morning and someone nearly always snatches them up. The major thing I sold less of this year was cut flowers. It was consistently less all season, so am pretty sure that's an economy thing, There wasn't any increased competition in the market that might account for it. Also, at times I had some gorgeous dahlias and hated to see them go abegging.

Those azaleas are lovely. Dogwood from seed? How cool is that!?!

A google page is what I use for my Cottage garden.
(you've all seen it before)

Google really has an abundance of options for Pages:
Google Page Creator, which both Libby and I used, is no longer accepting new signups;
Google Docs, which enables making spreadsheets, slideshows and Document pages,
and now
Google Sites.

The advantage of Sites is that you don't have to know any HTML code to string together your pages.
They are placed in hierarchy and a site map on your page directs visitors to each one.
You can link to a blog or other outside pages.

Now, everybody go make tons of pages for our viewing pleasure!

Nell ~ I love your Azalea walk. Very soothing. I need to make some cuttings from my azaleas, I have two the same, pink and white flowers.

Between my blog and my website I don't have time for making more, free or not. It's all I can do to keep up with those two things and reading everyone else's.

Maybe this post will inspire others to make pages of their gardens and blooms though. Especially now that it's cold and people are staying indoors more, dreaming about their gardens come spring.

It was 48 and felt like it was 42 this morning. For us that is COLD.
