Ground Orchids - Are they really hardy in Zone 8b?

Last summer I purchased some ground orchids for my mother at Home Depot. Ground Orchid was all that was on the tag, so, I planted them in the ground. I got them at 50% off which always excites me.

They were really pretty and and continued to have the little orchid-like blooms in a lavender color. Although the blooms were very small, it was my hope that the blooms would get bigger after the plant was more established and grew larger.

Over the winter I had the time to do a little reading on ground orchids. I still don't know if they're supposed to be potted plants or in-the-ground plants.

Has anybody in Zone 8b or lower, planted these in-ground with any success? If so, would you share a little info on soil type and sun exposure for them. Thanks!

If you have the one known as Chinese Ground Orchid, Bletilla striata, then it would be hardy for you, temperature wise.

On the other hand, the Philippine Ground Orchid, Spathoglottis plicata, is strictly a tropical plant and it's doubtful if it would survive at temperatures below freezing.

I grow Bletilla striata at several locations in my gar'den. with various amounts of sunlight and shade. Requires well drained soil or faces the danger of bulb rot. Voles love them and as a consequence, they need protection from the critters! If left undisturbed, they can form fairly large colonies in just a few years.

I have heard that Spathoglottis plicata can be a very demanding plant. requiring high humidity and constant attention to supplying moisture.

IMO, I think it is shameful and a sign of care-less management, that HD and other plant retailers, would purchase from a supplier that don't provide the Botanical binomial name, Hardiness and cultural information on their tags or pots.

Just wanted to say thanks, Ladywindsurfer. I checked out some pictures on the web of both plants. I believe that we have Chinese Ground Orchid, Bletilla striata. Yes! We'll be looking forward to a growing colony and larger blooms this year. I killed all of my indoor orchids, perhaps I'll have better luck with these.

Hi, I have quite a few containers. Some are 5, 3, and 1 gallon. Around 30 or 40 - have't counted. I am in an upstairs apartment but can use downstairs for plants. I had all of them on the deck last year - or first of this year and they were frozen solid for several days - I did cover them with a clear plastic that was kind of thick and had to climb over them to get downstairs. They all made it except one borderline plant for this zone. I have lilies, roses, hydrangeas, hostas, hellebores, iris. When they are downstairs I keep them in a protected area next to a cement wall with a fence - but - they are in an area that gets no sun it is wet and stays damp - sooooo - I am thinking I had better move them to a south facing wall even though they get more exposure. But the drainage is better. I use the plastic only for hard freezes, some frost is ok. Then when the danger is past I remove the plastic and roll it for the next time it gets cold. I hope that helps - I have graduated from taking them in when it got cold - and lived with plants in the kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedroom. Next was to cover everytime it got to the low 40's with a forecast of some frost - til now I can leave them outside, even the fuchsias made it and the hardy orchids bloomed better than ever.

Thank you, tm, good link. The operative word in the article is 'temperate.' There was a book that came out about 10 years ago which, rather than the scores of books that tell you how cold hardy a plant is, intead dealt with how 'warm hardy' garden plants were. Can't remember the title now. But it seemed a very useful book for hot 'winter-deficient' areas, like S. Florida although I don't remember how much it had on dormancy periods. Almost all 'temperate' plants require a genuine winter chill for their entire dormant period (not a few cool days here and there). Otherwise, they literally wear themselves out trying to stay green and grow year round. But Bletillas are very pretty in bloom and relatively inexpensive and should be experimented with in different zones to see how they do for you. I have some in a pot as well as in the ground. The potted bulbs I have to bring into the garage when the temperature drops into the 20Fs since, being aboveground in a pot rather than the ground, the bulbs and roots will freeze. They tolerate much lower temps when in the ground, and especially if mulched over.

Deb, I am in zone 10 so I can't help you with cold hardiness other than to tell you it did not seem to be as cold sensitive as my truly tropical plants, my winters never bothered it. I have seen trees planted in the ground that were 35' tall or better. Bill

Actually, I just remembered a long time ago my friend had a California fan palm in his back yard, and it was grown locally from seed. I believe it was in the ground for quiet a few years and it was well established. It pulled through the winters unprotected, but his neighbor hood "code" made him cut it down because it still had the beard on it and even when pruned they still did not like it, he was not so happy about that. But I think I will be going with the California fan palm. Our winters are dry and it only gets really cold here for about 2 weeks until it starts to warm up. I'll give it a try!

Well, let's also hope that even when it HAS a tag, that the tag is RIGHT!!

I hear you, Esh. You can't always go by the tag.

Two years ago one of my Cayenne pepper plants turned out to be a Habanero. I love spicy but prefer not to grow anything that requires wearing gloves to handle. Those things are just too hot!
