Neem Oil for Leaf Spot on Indian Hawthorn?

Does anyone know if spraying with Neem Oil will control/stop spread of Leaf Spot on Indian Hawthorne (ALBA)? If you use a different product, please let me know what it is. Leaf Spot has popped up seemingly suddenly on some plants we put in last spring. I had hoped these would be low maintenance. Guess that's not the case...

I had the same problem recently with leaf spots appearing on my Indian Hawthornes ( a few different dwarf varieties). I also have problems with scale, euonymus and possibly also tea types, so I assumed that they had migrated over to the hawthornes.

I sprayed them (as well as my camellias and euonymus) with horticultural oil (not neem, one of the refined petroleums) a few weeks ago and was planning to follow up starting this weekend with neem oil (garden safe 3-in-1) to try to get the crawlers. Don't know if this will work, but this is what im doing anyway.

Id be curious if anyone had a better plan as well.

Here's a good link. Looks like fungicide treatment is recommended because the cause is a fungus. While neem oil is said by some sources to be a fungicide, it appears to primarily be used to combat insect pests.

I've not used neem oil myself, this is just what I found by searching around based on your problem.

Hi Judi, Welcome to the forum. With Indian hawthornes, yellowing leaves and blackish-purple spots on the leaves are almost always a sign of a fungal disease called entomosporium leaf spot. It also affects red-tip photinias. Entomosporium leaf spot can be controlled, more or less, with alternate sprayings of a contact fungicide with a systemic fungicide. The systemic product fights the fungal disease itself while the contact product coats the foliage and prevents fungal spores from attaching to the leaves. I've linked an article that discusses entomosporium leaf spot. Be sure you promptly clean up all the leaves and twigs as they fall from the shrubs because they will harbor the fungal spores which then can reinfect your plants. I had Clara too, and mine used to do that on the west side of my house. It is sunburn. You could put a light shade cloth over them in this heat and be sure you water diligently through the rest of summer, but to be honest, even after mine were well established, they still got some sunburn in July/August, especially if they got reflected heat from brick siding. And they do get the fungal leaf spot photinias get. When you water, be sure the leaves aren't wet when the sun hits them (water the roots). If you have room you could plant a small, open tree to provide some relief from the full West sun on the area.

We had no leaf spot or sunburn problems with 'Ballerina' in a northwest facing bed that gets full sun from about 10:00 am to 3:00 pm during the summer. Usually looked very nice, but were in a spot we started to limit to one deep supplemental watering a month. While they did survived on this through the dry heatwave of 2011, they suffered worse than most everything else in the bed, so were eventually replaced with autumn sage and flame acanthus. Would not have any reservations about using them around Dallas where they get at least a bit of late afternoon shade in the summer and weekly irrigation as needed. May also work well in other exposures, but this is all we are familiar with.

Esh-GA, are you familiar with any of the fungicides on the list? Banner sounds familiar. Our local Pikes closed last year and it was the place I could depend on to find the various oils or other garden treatments we sometimes need. Other local options for me are Lowes and Home Depot. I find often they don't carry some of the fungicides or things like horticultural oil concentrate. What they offer often comes only in premixed, small bottles. Very expensive way to go. (I REALLY REALLY miss Pike's.)
