If the flowers weren't fully open this morning before the heatwave, they didn't get their pictures taken -- I won't be outside again today.

DREAMCICLE SUPREME -- Can't believe the heavy substance, and the bud count for such a new addition is terrific:

Chris the last picture looks like some kind of Orienpet lily. Perhaps Flashpoint? The grow to be very tall, and some catalogs call them lily trees (marketing gimmick, but you can see why they would call it that).

Spellbound, my stuff I planted from seed are just starting to emerge the last few days because of the sun and warmer temps - still below normal for this time of year but enough for the seedlings to start outdoors. Debbie, DH's family are in Bowmanville just outside of Oshawa - they experienced that same 2 hour mad storm - no hail either but it was wicked to say the least. Horrid weather. I take it then that your seeding for this year on the farm is behind schedule? Not at all funny. We've seen farmers in this area just seeding now too. Not a great year globally for farming. Our friends in Scotland will be feeling the pinch in food prices - southern England is in a serious drought along with France, Spain. There's no moderate weather this spring. Sure hope things improve. Environment Canada has predicted a hot summer for Ontario. I hope they are wrong to some degree. On a lighter note, where I've planted a new veggie bed just down from the house on a patch of field I had scraped back our doe in the area (I call her Bambietta) was curious - where's all the grass? You could follow her prints all over the corn, bush beans etc that were just planted. Almost comical when I think about it. Can you say - get the bloody deer netting up? Behind on that too. Because of our local raccoon (we call him Charlie) our garbage can has been moved into our cool utility room for the summer with all our recycling stuff. It's amazing the antics they get up to when wanting the top off a garbage can. We had everything so tied down, Charlie got the garbage can on it's side, hung onto the lid and literally was bouncing/jumping up and down on the side of it to get at the garbage. It was funny to watch at first. Not so funny when he succeeded. Don't need to entice the little guy to hang around so the garbage is indoors for the summer. And I should mention we have a rabbit that hops around. So far not interested in any gardening - there is so much lush stuff around our acreage. It's mixed forest, a few remaining old farm fields, some wet areas and a pond/linked in water shed to the lakes around here(Bob's Lake). For now there's plenty of food available. If the summer gets hot like they say, getting my caging up and fencing around my gardens will become critical. It's all new, this is our first summer here. So there are many challenges ahead if we can just get the weather to cooperate some more. Right now I have planted onion bulbs doing extremely well, chives, mint. Coming up from seeds are cabbage, carrots, beets, squash, sunflowers, california poppies, maltese cross, nasturtium, amaranthus ponytails. Transplants I have planted are: tomato, celery, parsley, lavender, jacob's ladder, stevia, gaillardia goblin, rosemary, german camomile, blue false indigo, echinacea, lupines, calendula and alaskan shasta daisy. And I have more annual seeds to plant. We'll see how that goes. Al new, virgin gardens, with all new exposed weed seeds................. What's showing in your garden? Cheers, Peggy

Looks like your seedlings are going well, the first seedling is exceptional, got those teeth! I like your smalls, have quite a few. I have Mysterious Eyes, it bloomed last season for the first time. The color saturation seemed dependent on the heat and sun, more saturation on cloudy days. I will add pictures for you to see. And on a sunny day, a big difference. Lovely either way. Sherry

Excellent answers. Now I agree with Tom about seeding. If you want the landscaper to do the job, just guide him through it. No rototilling, and follow the bag rate directions for seed. You measure the size of the yard and guide him through this. Wait a few weeks to drop the seed so that it will germinate quickly. Many people are disappointed with the germination time on bermuda because they put it down in February. Nothing happens until the soil gets hot, so you may as well wait. If you have stickers, that really indicates how bad the yard is. Sticker type plants only come into the picture when the yard is grossly neglected. I would start with an organic fertilizer and some deep and infrequent watering (below). Simply doing something should get rid of the stickers. They need plenty of neglect to thrive. You might have to inspect the stickers to determine if they are a grassy plant like grass or a broadleaf plant like clover. Weed b Gon will work on the clover but not on the grassy weeds. There is something called Grass b Gon, or there is Round Up. Either of these has to be used carefully because they will kill the surrounding lawn grass due to overspray. But the Weed b Gon can be sprayed on the common bermuda with no harm to the grass. Here is more on watering. I used to believe in daily watering, but after "discussing" it here in this forum, I realized I was wrong. The winner of the "discussion" was a landscape professional from...Phoenix. He insisted on taking control of the watering on his properties or he would not take the job. I have since refined the approach to account for air temperature as a guide. Watering: Deep and infrequent is the mantra for watering. This is for all turf grass all over the place. Deep means 1 inch all at one time. Put some cat food or tuna cans around the yard, and time how long it takes your sprinkler(s) to fill all the cans. Memorize that time. That will be the time you water from now on. My hose, sprinkler and water pressure takes 8 full hours to fill the cans. Your time will likely be less. I like gentle watering. As for watering frequency, that depends on the daytime air temperature. With temps in the 90s, deep water once per week. With temps in the 80s, deep water once every 2 weeks. With temps in the 70s, deep water once every 3 weeks. With temps below 70, deep water once a month. Note that you have to keep up with quickly changing temps in the spring and fall. This deep and infrequent schedule works in Phoenix and in Vermont, so it should work for you. The reason for deep and infrequent is to grow deeper, more drought resistant roots and to allow the soil to dry completely at the surface for several days before watering again. If it rains, reset your calendar to account for the rainfall. Having said that I did not really get into the Phoenix issues. Phoenix and Las Vegas summers are the most brutal in the country. The problem is not just the heat, it is the arid heat. Once it gets up around 110 degrees with humidity below 10%, you will have to water deeply every 3-4 days. You might back off to 3/4 inch every, say, Tuesday and Saturday. Above 115 degrees I would go back to a full inch on those days. But when the heat abates in the fall (November or so ;-) ), remember to back off on watering frequency. The main thing is to avoid daily watering. Even in Phoenix you should not need daily watering on a mature lawn. You will need 3x daily watering to germinate the seed, but never on mature turf. ANY QUESTIONS ON THIS POINT? As for your stickers problem, try this. Get an old blanket at a thrift store and drag that around the yard to collect stickers. Then throw it away. If you still have stickers, get another blanket. Any knit fabric will pick up stickers easily, but a blanket provides a little more heft to pick them up off the ground.

DREAMCICLE SUPREME is my favorite, in fact it took me awhile to even get to the nextr pictures as this one just stopped me in my tacks. I love it so much I immediatly had to go look it up. I see it is a Nicole Harry intro from 2007 or 2008. Well, too bad I don't buy Florida hybridized daylilies any more. How is it doing overall for you up north there? How long have you had it? Thanks.

Thanks for the input on the lily. How easy is it to move lily bulbs, anyway? I'd really like it to be in the back of the bed, and that way the fragrance will be even more noticeable from the screened porch.

Mantis, you definitely need to get Arctic Lace. It has been blooming non-stop and has had decent increase in the 1-2 years it's been here.

Bigack, Party Pinafore is such a pretty flower. I moved it a few years ago, and while it has bloomed since the transfer, there aren't many buds. I wonder if others have had good luck with it.

Rita, I swore I wouldn't purchase any Florida daylilies, either, but I couldn't help myself with Dreamcicle Supreme. I saw a few photos here and on the Lily Auction and had to have it. There was something about the shade of orange with that lime green throat. I knew I would love the color, but I wasn't expecting the very heavy substance and amount of buds. I think I added it in 2009, but don't remember it blooming last year. It was definitely worth taking a chance on. And it is listed as a SEV, which probably made up my mind for me.

Dreamcicle Supreme is gorgeous! Arctic Lace is so lovely, and everybody seems to like it, sounds very tempting, but I have a couple which look somewhat similar, hmmm.. I also like Anatomy of Chance and Party Pinafore! At least yours is fully open. Mine looks a little darker but it doesn't open flat. Yes, low bud count, but I love the face!

Chris, I rarely see a Florida hybridized daylily that makes me want to want to break my rule of no more southern beauties. Not that I don't like the Florida intros, I do look every year and think they are pretty. But not enough to tempt me. But DREAMCICLE SUPREME surly does make me want to break my rule for this one. Your picture is stunning!

Thank you, nat, kay, jean and CTC. I think I took over 100 photos this morning, but these were the standouts for me.

Debra, I thought you might like Anatomy of Change. It's supposed to pinch regularly (although it's not as pink as I've seen on Curt's website photos).

Rita, let me know if you decide to break down and buy it. I think Browns Ferry Gardens had it at at a decent price at the beginning of the season. Maybe I'll break down and buy another southern baby, too.

Can't make up my mind which I like better, Party Pinafore or Dreamsicle Supreme, just completely different in appearance. Dreamsicle Supreme reminds me of one of my seedlings, except the ruffles are a bit too much. It opens fine, but they are just a bit shaggy looking. I think of dreamsicle every time I look at it though. Love the edge & look of Party Pinafore.

Chris, DREAMSICLE SUPREME is my favorite - looks good enough to eat! I move and divide my lilies after the foliage turns yellow. You have a beauty there, whatever it is.

Definitely love DREAMSICLE. I also buy southern daylilies but always try to do some research before buying. Looks like you've got yourself a winner. I find alot of SEV's do very well here while others, well, they are much happier in the south.

I'm waiting to see how CITRIX does for more northern gardeners. I love that one too. Then put ORANGE BLOSSOM TRAIL in front of me and I might just breakdown and get some more daylilies this year.

Love Dreamcicle Supreme and all te rest. I had a tough time chosing one so I pick all the pinks. LOL!! I don't know what your 5 foot lily is but it sure is pretty. It looks a bit like Lilium Red dutch which isn't red here at all..Ellie
