Why arn't my repeat blooers not blooming?

I am a novice gardener and a "Pardon Me" repeat daylily in the garden I inherited only bloomed once last summer, and so far this summer, only once again. Also, in May I planted 6 Stella d'oro repeaters on a slope, and after the buds that were on them when I bought them bloomed, only one has formed buds again and bloomed again. What is going on? Should I not expect so much of the Stellas the first year? Both get plenty of sun and they are adequately watered, and the Stellas are firmly rooted--just don't bloom. Would fertilizer help--I put Osmocote in when I planted the Stellas, so I would think that would do for now. I was covering a slope with plants, so didn't buy large specimens--am I expecting too much of them? Thanks,alleycallie

Hi.

I'm not a daylily expert, although I grow quite a few. Yes, the plants need time to get settled into their new homes and put out roots, then growth, then blooms. The process takes a while.

Even with repeat bloomers, the first year you put them in is going to be iffy; they may not repeat because they have to establish roots in their new holes.

Depending on the maturity of the plant, they really take off in the 2nd or 3rd year. If you buy a single small fan or a very immature plant, then the 3rd year is when they start putting on a show. A more mature plant will put on a show in its 2nd year.

You are in zone 5/6. We have very short growing seasons. In warmer climates the plants get more time to get established and grow, so they usually mature more rapidly in warmer climates.

Any kind of gardening is about patience. Drat! I'm not a patient person myself. :-)

But next year and, especially, the year after, you'll be glad that you put those plants in.

I don't have Pardon me, but I have much prettier reblooming daylilies that are much better than Stellas. I know Stella has a great reputation, but usually it blooms heavily very early in the season, then nothing until later when the weather gets a bit cooler & even then not very heavy. Maybe if I fertilized better, but I don't fertilize much. Last year I did fertilize quite a bit, I noticed a difference in some daylilies, but no real difference in Stella.

I suspect the rose bush it was purchased for has died and what is growing now is the root stock it was grafted onto. This root stock is a once a year blooming rose that only blooms on second year wood. The flower buds on these types of roses are formed the previous fall The fact that you cut it back means you cut off any canes that would have produced blooms this year. In zone 5 we often experience a lot of winter dieback that kills any canes that might have produced flowers. It could also be an old garden rose which also only blooms on year old wood. Either way by cutting it back you've removed any flower buds. My advice would be to remove the bush and replace it with a repeat blooming hardy shrub rose or one that you don't mind having to provide some winter protection. These bloom on new wood and even if they dieback or are cut back, they'll bloom.

mantis: no, I never had it. Summertime Idyll has always been darker pink here than the photos from Rice. It can show a lighter pink when we have 90+ temps which thank goodness we are not experiencing now.

I'm more worried about powdery mildew than blackspot in my area. I've tried several hybrid musks that have suffered badly with PM, so I am reluctant to try another. It looks great in your photos, though. Perhaps I can go down to the San Jose Heritage Rose garden and see how it does there. I do believe that a field trip is in order.

Something unusual happened this growing season.... Last growing season when I was checking out other people's Macro's, very few had blooms in my area. The ones that did, had only maybe 1 to 3 blooms on the entire shrub.. This growing season, I'm seeing blooms on almost all macros in my area and they are covered in blooms. It's a drastic difference from last season. There's this one house that I drive by on my way to work that has a hedge of them. Last summer they did not have a single bloom. This year they are covered in vibrant blue blooms. I've never seen a single person in my area winter protect so it's not from that. I'm guessing it was due to a mild winter and no late season frosts?

Something else that might help would be to snap off all those seed pods that are trying to form. They do zap some energy from the plant.
