You might find using 2 forks, back to back (but slightl;y overlapping at the times), pushed into the centre of the plants then forced apart, works well to separate recalcitrant clumps of rootage. Smaller plants can be divided with trowels. This works well for me with fibrous rooted plants. However, if yours is geranium maccrorhizum, you can indeed root the sidestems in your preferred way (I like to put 4 or so in a litre pot of chick-grit and loam and leave in the greenhouse until spring) although, to be honest, I find this works better to take the cuttings earlier in the season before the stems start to get a bit gnarly...... I find it quite tricky to stop later geranium cuttings from rotting off unless I give them some bottom heat (and of course, I don't). I think some people will plant the cuttings directly in the garden, often under cloches or jars.......

serg... if you looked at the posts in this forum ... you should feel very lucky.. that lucky happened to stroll thru to answer your question ... as there hasnt been much other activity for months ... you might want to try the perennial forum ... for other ideas.. more suited to your zone ... in my z5 MI .. they HAVE TO BE brought in for winter ... as perhaps you already did ... i never got one to live indoors ... so i wont be any help ... lol .. usually they got so ugly by mid winter.. i put them out of my misery .... and chucked them out the back door into 3 feet of snow .... i am telling you this.. so you can prep girlfriend as to what it might end up looking like ... rather than blame you.. for not loving it enough .... one thing for sure.. it will not 'thrive' over winter... indoors... all you are trying to do.. is get it to live.. so you can juice it.. come next spring .... and i would NOT fert it ... in a semi-dormant situation ....but see above.. lol ken

Yes, pot them into clay pots with well drained soil. Continue to treat them as "cuttings", do not let them dry put! Keep them in the shade until it starts to cool off in the fall. When it has cooled off plant them in the ground if that is the intent. Preferable after they have defoliated. Realize that the commercially available plants are grafted onto standard Acer palmatum rootstock and that your cuttings are going to grow much slower that one that have been grafted.

They are among the easiest flowers to propagate. I use moist sand in a tray with drainage and put it out of direct sunlight.......there should be all sorts of directions online as to how to take the cuttings and prepare them so I'll spare going into detail. I like sand because of the perfect drainage, you can't overwater them that way, and because mechanically it holds the cuttings upright.
