These plants are actually Pelargoniums. But the ones I bought from Home Depot, so we could have different colors, also say "seed Geraniums". I believe what this actually means is that they were grown commercially from seed. I am not sure if they come true to seed or not. But was going to try them from seed to see. You may want to do that too if you like experimenting. I also plan on taking cuttings from the plant over the fall as these plants are very easy to do that with! Hopefully, for us, there will be many baby plants next spring and no need to buy for the store again. If you look around this forum I am sure you can find instructions on how to do that if you never have. (It's really easy.. honestly the less you fuss over it, the better they usually do.) I had good luck with this. Just broke off a pieces of plant and stuck it in the dirt and most of the time they grew! :) Kids like messing with the cuttings too. I hope you enjoy these plants. Hello Molly, I have grown, Pelargoniums, Hardy Geraniums and Erodiums from saved seed. In the case of Hardy geraniums and Erodiums the seedlings were indistinguishable from the parent plants. I have also collected seedlings from around these plants that were self sown. In the case of pelargonims, they are actually half hardy perennials, I have grown two or three different named varieties from and found the to be identical to the parent plant. I have not attempted to hybridise any of these plants I would suggest that, if space permits, you lift your plants and overwinter them in a frost free environment as well as sowing your saved seed. Collect the seeds before the 'cranesbill' part curls back and expels the seeds, but after the pod is dry. The timing can be tricky. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place. Chill or freeze seed for 4-6 weeks to help break their dormancy. Sow the seeds 1/2" deep and keep moist. Most varieties will bloom the second year from seed.

Yep, I find it can be a bit iffy although I have lots more success growing seeds from my own plants. Geranium sylvaticum, nodosum, soboliferum, platyanthemum, pratense and incana and (obvs) sanguineum and phaem are relatively easy, germinating quickly and gently bumbling along for a year or soGermination rate varies from almost 100% to less than 50%...and quite a lot of seed sellers put a tiny number of seeds in a packet - always makes my heart sink a bit when there are 8, 10 or 12 seeds. I have never tried macrorrhizum because it is such a doddle to nip bits of root off and poke them in the ground, water in, walk away. I have spent many hours rootling through huge geranium clumps, searching for elusive seeds - all those sterile, long flowering types...but sometimes a busy, roving bee comes along... and a few seeds are produced. Annoyingly, I have zero luck with direct sowing, yet self-seeding volunteers have no lack of vigour. I am planting prolific types to take advantage of this.
