Well, the only garden thing I did today was plant daylilies. Got a late start today in the garden because I had to work this morning and I just finished watering the planted daylilies and dragged myself in now afew minutes ago. Haven't even had dinner yet. I got the rest of my plants from Mike Huben planted plus almost all my order from Melanies North Country Daylilies. I have four more to do tomorrow but otherwise that order from Melanie of 31 daylilies (including some from Brian Culver in Canada) is all planted. I want to get them planted tomorrow plus my roses and sedum so I can drag out my tomato cages and set up my tomato rows in my veggie garden. I have got to get that done and should plant those tomatoes as this Monday I have daylily orders being shipped from Karol Emmerich, Don Herr and Phil Korth. So by Wednesday I could well have more Daylilies to plant and I certainly will by the end of the week. Trying to get everything done in what seems like all at once to me.

USPS is definitely the best way to send them. Almost an entire shipment of daylilies sent to me from Brown's Ferry by UPS in their brown truck got so overheated during their trip up here to the country in this hot Texas sun, they died from crown rot. I'm assuming the reason they died so soon was due to being overheated. The vendor wouldn't replace them, so I was out a tidy sum. Eclectic Gardens in Oregon sent me a really great order, each one had the roots nicely wrapped in white floral paper. They were so clean, and so well-protected, I was quite impressed. I just had to ask the vendor what kind of paper she used, since I hadn't seen white floral paper. The plants all arrived in excellent condition. Nancy

Greenwood in Somis carries daylilies that perform well in Southern California heat. I have had success with both evergreen and dormant daylilies. Be aware that in our climate, the pinks have a tendency to turn peachy and the lavendars usually turn mauve. I have also had to move all of my daylilies into light shade. The leaves burned in the sun here. They do very well in light shade, though. If I were to try another yellow, I might go for Hyperion. The Stella daylilies are not generally good performers in Southern California. I just got Joan Senior at Home Depot, and it's blooming its head off. It's a very pale yellow. I'd contact Seed Savers and tell them what happened first. Then tell them you're trying to get them to grow but would they consider replacing them if they die. They might not if you were given a chance to insure the shipment, but it really depends on the company and their supply. Yes, I'd see if I couldn't get them to perk up with some water and rest for a few days. Then harden them off before planting them. Look in the FAQs for for how to do it if you aren't certain. You could rescue them now and then lose them if you don't harden them off! Good luck!
