New Years Resolutions for the garden

Well, looks like a new year will soon be here. I thought it would be fun to talk about any garden resolutions we have for the coming year.

Last year I posted this question too (New Year Resolution for 2010). Those of you who posted, were you able to keep your resolutions?

On that post I said I wanted to keep the garden looking neater and also get around to doing projects like building an picket fence and arbor out in the front, as well as making a privacy trellis to block out a neighbor.

I regret to say I didn't keep the garden tidy at all. Last year the main things I wanted to do better on was edging, mowing, weeding and deadheading/cutting back. Guess my opinion of "messy" has changed a lot. I'm trying to be more laid back with regards to some things. I HAVE started tidying up after I've been out in the garden, instead of leaving tools and millions of plastic pots around to clutter up the yard I am stashing them away and out of sight. I suppose that counts for something ;-)

Ever notice how much garden plans seem to change from winter to spring?? The winter plans are always so grandiose and fantastic- then you get a reality check in spring and realize they may have been more than is reasonable to do! I didn't get around to making the picket fence and arbor out front with a veg garden, and likely never will. In this neighborhood I think it might get trashed if I put a garden too far out in the yard anyhow. I DID do a lot of projects last spring though! I cut away grass from under the front tree to expand the shade garden. Then I also made a raised veggie bed out back with blocks and made an island bed too.

Didn't make a privacy trellis. I put one little metal trellis where I needed some blocking (will need to get more in spring though) and also moved a flame maple to a 'hole' along the fence line. That will help block when it grows in.

This next year I likely won't be making any new beds, just improving the existing ones. My resolution for 2011 is to chuck the plants I am not happy with and replace them with better items. To move the things that don't look quite right where they are now. In summer I started doing this and shifting things around so that the plants that got ratty looking by summer/after blooming in spring were hidden behind those plants that stayed tidy into fall. Plan to do more of that come spring and tweaking here and there as well as getting a some 'art' for the garden.

Your turn! What are your new years resolutions?
