I don't have any firm ideas for you. You might try Googling l940 style fencing, architecture, or landscaping and see what comes up.

Check zoning restrictions and such before getting your heart set on anything. If you are in town there are probably some rules.

Did you see the N&O article on garden sheds? I think it was a week ago in the Home and Garden section. There was a fellow mentioned who built custom sheds, but for a small one (8x8 feet), I thought his prices were really reasonable.

What architecture style for the stucco house? We have Jerith aluminum fence in bronze and really like it. Lifetime warranty, no maintenance like wrought iron. You can get it with "puppy rails" at the bottom if you have small dogs. Our landscaper installed it for us (I think I've given you Robert's info in the past?). Although, I don't think this is a difficult fence to install if you have fairly level ground.

Here's the fence -- it is 4 feet high and it comes in 6 foot sections. You can get different pickets or no pickets on top. We used pickets to keep the big birds (crows) from roosting there. You can get corner posts for it. Robert's crew built the 2x2 stone corners out of block, then put stone on them with capstones on top. That's expensive, whereas the fence pricing is really good.

Thanks Cameron- The house is a typical end gable "L" with a porch across 2/3 of the front. It is quite plain, but I think with the right touches it could go english cottage or Southern cottage. I'm leaning toward English Cottage, so I think a fence similar to yours would look nice. A stone shed would be great, but out of budget. Any other ideas?

Here is a couple photos of my 20x20 shed. I live in a 1926 schoolhouse and I've been told this shed was where the teacher housed her horse and buggy. It was built from old barn beams for the frame and sheathed with rotten plywood with no doors when I moved here 12 years ago. It has undergone a couple renos since then, first being a barn for my horse, then a garden studio where I make cement stepping stones and my partner creates metal garden sculpture. Oh yeah, it houses my motorcycles too. :)

When the photos were taken I was in the process of enlarging the perennial bed and wrapping it around the corner of the shed to a new second entrance.

Roses blooming last summer, before the latest reno this spring.

It is board and batten barnboard with the gable ends being shingled. The cedar doors were built from wood salvaged from a friends old sauna this summer. There is a rose arbour across the front and a wisteria arbour over the main entrance. We installed an additional sliding door on the other side this spring, so I can drive my motorcycles straight thru and will build another arbour over that door for clematis in the spring. I dug and installed a small pond beside the people door this fall and will get it up and running in the spring.

Wow, what a cool shed! You all have given me a lot of inspiration. What do you think about shingle siding on the shed with the stucco house? Does it really matter? I should probably just do what I like and everything will come together! Love the Garden Shed Hall of Fame!

What colour is the stucco on the cottage? Cedar shingles are going to be reddish in colour though eventually they will weather grey if you let them. You can also put a coating on them that will weatherproof and help them retain the cedar colour, if that is what you like.

The shingles on my shed right now are just pine; shingles that are sometimes called "shim shakes" as they are very inexpensive and usually used for shimming doors and windows when they are being installed. You can buy them in bundles from HD, a lot will be waste as they are not very high quality but they are much cheaper than cedar and you can hide a lot of the imperfections if you plan ahead. They weather grey very quickly.

In fact, you could stain the shingles any colour you want and could do something that either matches or coordinates with your stucco.

I think it would look great regardless.

I've sided the front of my greenhouse with cedar shingles and weatherproofed them. That is what I will do to the shed eventually also so they match.

Again- a big wow! The stucco is a typical ivory. Here is a pic. Not much curb appeal now, but imagine the possibilities!

Oh, it's lovely! It just needs a cottage garden and some porch furniture. :-) I think shake siding or board and batten siding on a shed will look great. Are the shutters board and batten? You can stain the shed any color you like (as long as there are no neighborhood restrictions). Our house is cedar shake with a solid stain.
