Source of plastic nursery pots

Does anybody know of an online source for the plastic nursery pots like you get your starter plants in from the garden center where I wouldn't have to purchase hundreds? I called one local garden center and he wants 49 cents each..think that sounds a bit expensive. I am thinking about the 4-4 /1 inch ones. They can be any color, square or round, with drain holes in them. Anybody has some FREE ones they want to get rid of, I'll pay postage within USA. I might be interested in between 25-50 pots.

Pippi, I ordered some one gallon sized pots a few years back from a source I found by googling "source for one gallon nursery pots". I can't remember the name of the supplier but they were quite reasonable and you could purchase in smaller quantities like you are searching for.

Try The Greenhouse Mega Store.

They have all sizes and shapes. Check out the Hobby packs for small purchases. The site is a little confusing, so you might want to call them to be sure you're ordering what you want.

You might also want to place an add on Freecycle.org. There may be people with lots of saved pots that will give them to you for free.

Are any schools near you involved in a 'green up' type program where they are trying to pretty up the yard and plant some flowers and shrubs and trees? Maybe they have some teachers who are trying to teach about seeds/growing etc and would appreciate some pots (and maybe some free seeds and maybe even someone to come in and spend an afternoon a week teaching about gardening in a "gardening club"). I know our school asked for some divisions to use in the new gardens. I sent mine in a plastic bag, but if they had sent a pot or two home with DGD, it wouldn't have been so messy. :)

I have THOUSANDS of black nursery pots from 1-5 gallon size near the Eastern Iowa Airport on Wright Bros Blvd SW. Call me or email and I will give you the address where you can come and pick them up. I have always refused to throw them in the landfill but may have to as our lease is expired and they have to all go by May 1 2007. Also have many over 500 Oak trees 1-2" caliper in ground I have to find a home for....selling for $5 per ft (IN GROUND) or $10 ft dug and loaded in your vehicle. Minimum 20 trees. We have a recycling system here in Ontario, Canada and so I just went to the seasonal garden centers and grabbed as many plastic containers in the recycling area, as I could possibly get. I did find that garden centers do charge a lot for their pots - so why bother to buy pots if I could get them for free.
If you continue to find problems securing these pots, I would suggest that you go to the dollar store instead and grab disposable coffee cups. I used the styrofoam kinds last season which worked well. For 1 dollar (at least here in Canada, it's 1 dollar per a bag of 25)

And if this doesn't work, try to get used pop (gallon sized) bottles which you can cut in half and use it as pots. I use these to winter sow new seeds - which works like miniature cold frames.

Have you ever been to www.freecycle.org? If not, it's a yahoo group where you can post listings for things to give away for free, or receive things from others for free. The idea is to keep things from going to landfills. I see lots of plants on there and on more than one occasion in my area seen listings for those plastic pots. I would have taken them too had I not already had a hundred of them laying in my own back yard.

If Freecycle doesn't work out for you, I have a bunch currently buried underneath the snow. But if you can get them for free locally, that will save you the cost of postage.

Definitely try freecycle -- I gave away a ton of my "pots stash" last year that way. I still have tons, but can't really get into the shed this time of year.

I'm unclear on exactly what size you want. Do you mean what I call 4-packs/6-packs? or do you mean 4" diameter round? When I have needed specific sizes for my african violets, I've ordered from Novosel Enterprises. Great prices and they have a big selection. Another tip: if you live near a cemetery, you can pick up LOADS of free pots there! the caretakers will be glad to see them go. Whenever people plant at gravesites they leave the pots and trays behind... the caretakers have to get rid of them.
