Sorry, I am not a fan of what I call "plant freaks". I would never take up space with it. That's just me.....lots of others would disagree. But, then, I don't really like lots of the hybrids in plants; love the older, simple forms. Suppose it's an "age" thing?

CMK - it says Z5 in a protected location....can you source it? Is it really pricey? There is a real satisfaction pushing the envelope, every once in a while. I'd say go for it!!

I have only seen this rose once, quite the oddity and for people who like plants with green flowers it's another to add to their collections. I can see this rose used in all green or mixed floral arrangements. If nothing else it is quite the conversation piece :o).

I've seen pics of that green rose for years, and just can't cozy up to it. I guess I want my roses to have color. Now I grew the annual aster 'Hulk' and I just loved it! Weird I know.

I can't grow roses...The deer would really think a green rose to be a treat at their salad bar.

I've got seeds for a few green annuals...zinnia, nicotiana and ammi.

It's unusual alright. I've seen another green rose,not the one shown here. It's not my cup of tea.

However unusual plants do happen naturally. Consider a garden favorite, Harry Lauder's Walking stick, which is plant from a mutated branch of the ordinary witch hazel. All Harry Lauders are simply clones of that original branch and these are grafted onto other root stocks because it cannot grow it's own roots.

To think of it, most of our flowers are mutated forms of the original wild plants. We actually have gardens filled with frankenflowers. ;0)

I would say this is a rose mostly for the collector of oddities. Old roses are also my favorite flowers and this one is technically an old rose, plus a china, which is very suited to my climate, but I don't think I would plant it in my current garden, where space is at a premium. Too many old teas, chinas and noisettes I would plant first. As Annette says, it's quite a conversation piece though. If you like unusual plants this one seems to fit your bill.

"It is not hardy in very cold climates, and is known to die back to the ground most years in zones 5 and 6." Since you're in zone 5, I would suggest you pick a rose grown on its own roots, and not grafted. If it dies down to the ground level for you, it has a chance to resprout back in Spring, if you mulch it well. This doesn't happen with a grafted rose, because what would be sprouting back would be the rootstock, not the rose itself.

My Rosa viridiflora came from Chamblee's in Tyler, Texas.
FWIW, it's been the most prolific blooming rose in my garden; there were at least a half dozen blooms on it today, and about that many more buds.

It's like a secret treasure, something you only see if you know what to look for.

I am not sure if this rose would come back in this zone, but it may be worth a try. For some reason, I keep imagining this rose in a lovely boquet along with Cecile Brunner on the table.

VERY peppery. I'm surprised at just how well it's doing, still blooming and producing buds after several nights in the 20's. Tomorrow I'll post pictures so you can see the maroon tinge it gets on some of the petals/sepals.
