This has to be the greatest homemade hummingbird feeder I've ever seen!

Dana, I'm excited for you! I lived in an old farmhouse in the middle of cornfields and you can bet I had a hard time attracting hummers to my yard, but I kept planting bird-attractive plants (flowers, shrubs, and trees) and provided water sources and low and behold, after 8 years, I finally got my first hummer! They were regular visitors for the remaining 10 years I lived there. Enjoy, and I'll do a happy dance for you! :)

Three Plants I've Seen Hummers at Today

At this point the hummers are visiting all the expected plants in the yard, except. I grew out this big group a African Gold Impatiens and planted a patch alongside the garage in a shade garden. They are growing really well, thick stems, lots of flowers, but as of yet I have not caught a hummer feeding at them. They've definitely been visiting the hardy fuschias nearby, but everytime I come around the side of the garage if there is a hummer there it flushes. Maybe a bottle of wine and a big sit is in order. It's the same with the fusion impatiens in another shady area. These things must have nector since ants are visiting the flowers constantly, but again another couple of fuschias are stealing the show. I'm conserned about my liver, it may take a lot of wine to know for sure whether the hummers are using these impatiens. And I would concur about hummers and flowers. Its great to have that feeder up knowing that there is always food available. But there is nothing like watching a hummingbird working a flower patch - that is the best of both worlds. Mimi - you'll probably notice, if you haven't already, that your Cardinal Climber only provides food until early afternoon. Although in the evening I've always loved this plant when it is backlit by the sun. It is so cool it would be worth growing even if it never flowered. I have three posts out in the veggi garden that are connected by wires at the top and bottom, with strings running between the wires - my pea patch in spring. The wire at the top is rather old and lax causing a wave effect. In August when the vines have filled in and reached their full six feet the whole thing looks like a bat with its wings spread.

I am ever more hopeful for an entire summer of hummers next season! -Thank you all for sharing your experiences and for your encouragement and support. : ) Oubliette, I have yet to hear the voice of a hummingbird -well, in the feather, that is (have heard recordings though), but I did once catch wind of the hum of this one's wings! -a unique sound, that! It's good to know that they have a voice -I look forward to listening in! You don't say, jenny! -way up on the 18th floor?!!! -I had no idea the heights these wee wildlings would go to! I really must share this with a friend of mine who's balcony is 15 lower than that -Wow, I would have never guessed! Thank you for sharing. I know I'll likely never see the numbers that California Frank is graced with (just saw his photo album - Wow! -hummingbird heaven!), but one, two or even a few jewels setting claim on my small urban garden will fit just right. It's so COOOOOOOOOOOOOL! We have no hummers in Vietnam, otherwise I might ask DH to make one for our garden!

How clever. Now I am wondering what the little red feeder cups are.

It would be quite a contraption to keep clean.

Sure wish he had given dimensions.....I will put that in my project file which grows larger by the week and year...probably will never get any of them done, but one can hope!

Quite an innovation, isn't it? My hummers fight. They do better with more than one feeder, out of sight of one another.

My fav purchased feeder is inexpensive. It has a bottle like a quart vinegar bottle. The red part comes off in two pieces so you can easily clean everything with a brush, including the inside of the bottle.

Once you start feeding hummingbirds, they don't forget where to come back. If the feeders aren't up when they arrive in spring, they will inquire, chattering at whoever goes outside and peering in the windows where the feeders usually hang. It's a real commitment.

My goodness. That's quite the feeder. On the other hand, my hummingbirds are very satisfied with my garden.

On oa snowy day like today. wish the hummers are back.I didn't have as many this year. Think some of the flooding scared some away. But just like clock work they are there in Spring.
