Potted Ponytail Palm - Full Sun or Part Shade?

I have a potted ponytail palm. I know that their native climate is hot and dry. However, not sure if that means full sun or if it would do better in part shade. I read several websites that said after initial planting, keep the pot in part shade and it got me wondering. Where is yours?

Mine is growing on the NE corner of my screen porch so some shade. It started out of a 3" pot and now is a 12' 4 headed monster. It is next a water barrel and gets lots of water. It has been a no maintenance plant.
It bloomed for the first in 25 years after the extreme winter we had 2 years ago.

mine is in the ground on the south east corner of my porch and it too is a monster. with so many freezes we had this year I was surprise that it didn't bother it.
I take all the babies out and sell them. seems the more I remove the it has.

Sounds interesting but other factors do effect the readings - time of day for instance. For the cost of a roll of film and processing I took a day and from my upstairs bedroom window took photos every hour from sunup to sunset, in early June and again in August as the arc of the sun does change. I then made a sketch of my yard and location of planting beds and was able to calculate hours of sunlight on each section. Some areas got only midday light, others only early am or pm and actual amount of light was considerably less than I thought. But anything that helps pick plants appropriately is very appreciated!

They're both naturally understory palms, loving wetland forest edges. I have all my needles and minors in areas where they get partial or filtered sun. I've heard others say that their needles get burned in full WINTER sun, when its especially cold. I think the winter filtered light helps. It's a tough call, I think farther south where winters are milder, either could go in full sun and do well. I also believe any kind of transplant sets them back. They might perform best where they are.

The recommendation is usually to leave them in good light but not necessarily full sun just for a few days, and moving gradually into full sun - not for weeks and months. If the plant was in full sun prior to, it shouldn't be a problem. Many of us in 'colder' zones keep them indoors for quite a few cold months, and the light isn't that great. I always move plants outdoors into full sun (but acclimatize them first) as soon as possible. And if propagating while outdoors, I usually leave them in the same general area where the 'mother' plant is.

Those pictures are amazing! Since this is for the front entry-way, picking a pot that works in the space was a big part of the equation. Too wide, and we would have to be really careful about how we get into the front door - it will be just inches away on either side. And yes, we could pick other plants, but I think the ponytails will look spectacular for a few years until they outgrow the pots. Luckily, in my area, I can plant them in ground when they get too big. :)

Thanks for your replies! I had it in all-day full sun, all of last year. I think that was a mistake. This year, I am moving it to part sun/part shade.

Hi Carol, just wanted to add that my 2 have been in full sun on the south side of my home for 3 years now and are thriving. They are potted.

I have 2 potted ones in the pool screen in full sun, for about 4 years now, they never bothered, but got damaged during the winter by fungus (I guess to cold and too much rain water). They are now recovering.

Mine are 4-5 bulbs in a pot in full sun. The leaves are pale green. When it was in partial shade the leaves were darker.
