formality in the cottage garden

Anyone who knows my garden knows it is fairly informal. It has sweeping curved edges, a mix of plants and shrubs, and is sometimes a little overgrown looking because of infrequent weeding/deadheading/etc.

I have recently come to the conclusion that what is needed in the garden is a touch of formality. I have seen it done in various ways both here and in mags. I think it is a nice contrast and adds a bit of orderliness to a style of gardening that is known for its beautiful chaos.

I have been brainstorming ways to add this formality to my garden. I think the white fences around the yard add some straight, clean edges. And I was thinking that maybe adding some garden decorations that were sort of old European in style (like a metal urn, concrete artichoke finial, etc) would add the formality I am looking for without having to re-design my whole garden.

So, how you guys use a touch of formality in your own gardens? I would love to hear.
